The Legendary DOBBS

In a city full of historical ubiquity and a street famous for its arts, shops, entertainment and eclectic culture, The Legendary Dobbs has been a long-standing memorabilia for what was created on South Street in Philadelphia in 1975.

The Legendary Dobbs was first established under the name JC Dobbs, which reflected a stereotypical classic rock bar until its sad closing in 1996.  Throughout the years, guests have experienced some of the greatest moments in rock-n-roll history.  For 21 years, JC Dobbs is one of the few Philadelphia clubs that has only presented original music.  Many local talents emerged at JC Dobbs including Oasis, Green Day, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Bo Diddley, The Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, Rage Against the Machine, The Offspring, Mother Love Bone, Indigo Girls and countless more.  Whether JC Dobbs helped much international stardom arise or it helped create a name for local talent, Dobbs is a historical part of Philadelphia.

Luckily, on Saturday, December 18^th, 2010, The Legendary Dobbs re-opened its doors.  Philadelphians will hopefully remember the legacy that was a staple in the Philadelphia music scene, rich in history and tradition for 21 years.  According to George Manney, producer of “Meet Me On South Street, The Story of JC Dobbs,” the new owners-renters of the 304 South Street location have some big shoes to fill, IF they can.”  Robert Damerjian, Justin Wolk and Heshey Schlachterman make up the new ownership that is committed to making this venue a destination for artists, fans and music enthusiasts alike.  “They need to work closely with the local music community, radio, press and TV to help generate an interest to South Street again, as most of the live music dried up years ago in that area… Hopefully my documentary, “Meet Me On South Street, The Story of JC Dobbs”, may spark some interest to the new generation of musicians and what came before them and perhaps take a few ideas with them on their journey performing music in Philadelphia,” says Manney.

Dobbs has refined their look by highlighting their new cherry finished bars, copper toned ceilings and brand new audio and video systems.  However, the original stages are still in place to spark the nostalgia that is indicative of the Dobbs experience.
