Full band, The songs are so real-

istic. Come see him over at the

Hottest newcomers- Chainsmokers

and Shawn Mendes

The 2017 Billboard Music Awards

nominations have been announced.

Drake and The Chainsmokers lead

the pack with 22 nods. Among those,

Drake will compete for Top Artist, Top

Male Artist and Top Billboard 200 Art-

ist. The Chainsmokers will also vie for

Top Artist, as well as Top Duo/Group

and Top 100 Artist. Twenty One Pilots

follows with 17 nominations, then

Rihanna with 14, The Weeknd with

13 and Beyoncé with 8. The first five

categories were announced by Pete

Wentz and Julia Michaels earlier Mon-

day on Good Morning America. The

Billboard Music Awards will air on May

21 at 8PM on ABC. Shawn Mendes

whose star continues to rise is being

mentioned a lot. His “Mercy” flies 10-1

on the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks

chart (dated Jan. 14), knocking his

own “Ruin” from the top slot. With the

bump, the singer-songwriter becomes

the third act to succeed itself at No. 1.

The previous two were? Justin Bieber,

whose “Sorry” replaced “Love Your-

self” on the Jan. 30, 2016, ranking,

and Zayn, who achieved the feat twice

consecutively when “It’s You” topped

the list dated March 19, 2016, and was

succeeded by the No. 1 reigns of “Like

I Would” (March 26) and “Befour” (April

2). This guy has what it takes to be a

major star. Still very young he already

is appealing to a broad base of fans.

That is the key. Shawn is nominated

for 3 Billboard Music Awards, Top artist

Top male artist and top social artist.

Shawn Mendes has long looked up to

John Mayer as a songwriter, and on

April 3 he finally got to perform with

his hero onstage in Toronto. Mayer

brought out Mendes as a surprise

guest at his concert, where the young

singer quickly broke out into his song

“Mercy.” Mayer joined in with some

harmonies and acoustic guitar, and the

two dudes transitioned smoothly into

Mayer’s song “In Your Atmosphere.”

Nothing more special for an up and

coming artist to perform with his idol,

the artist he looks up to. I was able to

meet Shawn last year at The Philadel-

phia Jingle Ball right after I DJed my

opening set. I was very impressed by

his positive attitude. He definitely has

The Chainsmokers are an American

DJ/producer duo consisting of Andrew

Taggart and Alex Pall. The EDM-pop

duo achieved a breakthrough with

their 2014 song “#Selfie”, which was a

top twenty single in several countries.

Their debut EP, Bouquet was released

in October 2015 and featured the

single “Roses”, which reached the top

10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. “Don’t

Let Me Down” became their first top

5 single there and won the Grammy

Award for Best Dance Recording

at the 59th awards ceremony while

“Closer” became their first number-

one single on the chart. They have

also won an American Music Award

and five iHeartRadio Music Awards.

The duo’s second EP Collage was

released in November 2016, consisting

of several previously released singles.

Their debut studio album Memories

was released in April 2017. The music

careers of The Chainsmokers could

have been over before they really got

started. In 2014, the budding DJ duo

decided to appear on American Idol

for a guest performance. With a single

hit to their name--the garishly mocking

“#Selfie”--the New York DJs appeared

on the singing competition in leather

jackets, pressing play on their song

before prancing around the stage to

snap photos with the likes of Ryan

Seacrest and Jennifer Lopez. Within

hours of the cringe worthy appear-

ance, fans and fellow artists lambasted

The Chainsmokers’ Alex Pall and Drew

Taggart. Two years after that appear-

ance, The Chainsmokers have remade

themselves from dance music punch

line into festival headliners whose

songs have come to dominate pop ra-

dio. While they narrowly missed the cut

on FORBES’ list of top-earnings DJs in

2016, numerous promot-

ers said they expect the

groups’ booking fees to

more than double this

year, making them early

contenders for next year’s

rankings. “The Chain-

smokers are moving up

to the level of Calvin Har-

ris,” said one Las Vegas

promoter who booked

the group in the past and

declined to be named for competitive

reasons. “Not many people have had

the record of commercial success that

they’ve had. They’ve blown past every-

one.” Two artists to watch in the com-

ing years are Shawn Mendes and the

Chainsmokers, these guys are young

have the more room to grow as artist.
