Dreaming nothing more than becoming a part of a band that embodied all that was missing from music, five local Philadelphians risked everything, abandoning their own steady gigs, to form Octane. As their die-hard fans will attest, Octane continuously broke the mold of traditional “rock bands,” providing a no-frills, no-nonsense, rock ‘n roll sound that was reminiscent of the metal acts of yesteryear.

The band headlined two sold out shows at the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia and was voted #1 Unsigned Band in a Y-100 (WPLY) listeners’ poll in 2004 and 2005. They won Best Original Band and Best Original CD in 2003 and 2004 with the album When All is Said and Done at the Philadelphia Music Awards. When All is Said and Done was released independently and has sold over 20,000 copies. The radio hit song, I For One, had over 1,500 spins on 94.1 WYSP FM (a record number for an unsigned artist). A second single, Gasoline, received over 1,000 spins and was featured on The Dale Earnhardt Jr. / Budweiser NASCAR Year in Review DVD. Five of Octane‘s tracks were on the Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball Video Game soundtrack. Also, the song Enemy from the album Rise Up was chosen as the Number 74 Song of the Decade by

You may also recall Octane performing with such notable artists as Sevendust, Fuel, Disturbed, Chevelle, Taproot, Days of the New, Judas Priest, Kid Rock, Sinch, Mudvayne, 3 Doors Down, Slash’s Snakepit, Earshot, Nonpoint, Gene Simmons, and Constantine Maroulis.

dazeend_promopicSeveral years ago when I started playing in a band, me and the guys decided we wanted to do something different. I had spent 3 years booking bands on my own and during that time, I realized that many of them were doing the same exact thing. They were basically playing the same songs the same boring way. I mean it was to the point where we would literally go to 3 different clubs to see 3 different bands and it all seemed like the same show! So we put something together that truly was different and people loved it. This is part of the problem with the cover band scene in my opinion. Too many bands think it has to be done a certain way, conforming to what everyone else is doing. Thankfully, there are still plenty of bands that “get it”, who are changing things around and working really hard to entertain the crowds. I love to go out and see live music; both cover and original and when the band is unique, it’s even more enjoying. Recently I had the chance to see Daze End, a band from DE and I was really impressed.

Daze End is a 6 piece Power House of energy and music, combined to bring an all new and original spin to songs you’ve always loved. By adding a funky, Reggae , Ska or more Rockin’ sound to a song, Daze End will take a song, strip it down and spit it back out in their own original way.

The band actually has all original roots, starting out as Daze Alone. They enjoyed a solid 10 years of playing their awesome original music from 1994 to 2004. After a few years off from playing as a band, they put together a reunion show in 2008 and since it went so extremely well, bass player, Chris “Soup” Campbell and lead singer, Joel Marcus decided they wanted to continue playing music on a full time basis. The choice to do strictly cover music was difficult for them at first, but by doing it THEIR way, it enables them to be creative while still pleasing the big crowds who come to see them.

I spoke to Chris about all of this and I was really able to relate to what Daze End is trying to accomplish. Although they have only been together for 2 years, they truly believe in changing the way things have been done by many bands that have preceded them. Chris is so dedicated to this project that he even quit his job to play music full time. He explained to me that “We are definitely re-inventing the cover band. It’s not just a line. When you come to see Daze End, it’s going to be a different experience. We have great stage presence and we always get the crowd involved. It’s a true SHOW”

It is refreshing to me as a musician who believes in the same ideas but also as a person who appreciates seeing live music. I like to go out and just sit back and enjoy live music, but I also like to be challenged. I really believe that most people who go to see live music feel the same way. People are tired of the same thing over and over, and Daze End is one band that sees this. They offer great live music that is danceable; while creating a party atmosphere that will always insure a good time for everyone.

The band is currently gearing up for a very busy spring and summer schedule and will be rocking places like Seacrets in Ocean City, MD, The Hilton Casino in AC as well as the Sands in Bethlehem and Mohican Sun Casino in Wilkes Barre. Daze End is Joel Marcus on lead vocals, Bobby Enlow on guitar and vocals, Travis Hill on Trombone, Matt Helzler on the sax, Mike Hostler on drums and Chris “Soup” Campbell on bass and vocals. You can visit their website at or on Facebook. Daze End is available for parties, weddings, corporate events, casinos and bars/clubs. You can book the band by contacting Al Geary at Shore Bets 215-884-4357.

SEAFOOD & RIGATONIAt the 3 Monkeys Cafe; they don’t “Monkey Around” when it comes to a superb dining experience. Owned by Gavin, Mike & Ed, they are the 3 Monkeys! They grew up together and aspired to this wonderful little place across from the Torresdale Train Station, in Northeast Philadelphia (9645 James Street). Its a hop, skip and jump from the Olde City/Center City area. And it has the “feel” of being at one of those hip, hot spots without the hassle of traffic and parking!

The atmosphere is simply wonderful. You can sit at the one of a kind 1890’s hand-carved bar and enjoy a variety of seasonal and Craft Brews or have a specialty drink like the Monkeytini-while dining on their delicious fare. Or you can dine in the formal Victorian-styled dining room, where my guest and I ventured in. It was very cozy and intimate. We sat by the fireplace-perfect for this particularly snowy night. Dotty, Manager, along with Katie, our waitress and the rest of the staff were just as heartwarming-friendly, smiling and the service was spot on. The menu had a variety of hunger pleasing items everything from soup, sandwiches, and wraps to full entrees. They even offer a kids menu for the little Chimps in your life.

Finding it difficult to choose, Dottie suggested we try a few of their signature appetizers. We had the Fresh Cut Homemade French Fries with their special Monkey Mayo Sauce, Asian Potstickers with Sweet Chili Sauce, Pierogies with Sour Cream, and Drunken Shrimp with Sweet Chili Sauce. Our favorite hands down was the Drunken Shrimp. Jumbo Beer-battered Shrimp with Panko bread crumbs, dipped in their amazing Sweet Chili Sauce. It was simply delicious! This appetizer typically comes with their fabulous homemade French Fries and for just $12.99 it is well worth it!
Next came our sampling of their entrees which came with a house salad, fresh vegetables and your choice of rice or a potato. We went with the sampling of three wonderful entrees. First we tried the Seafood & Rigatoni (18.99). This dish had Extra Large New Zealand Mussels, Sumptuous Scallops, Jumbo Shrimp, Sun-dried tomatoes, Prosciutto, Shallots, and Capers in a Garlic White Wine Sauce over Rigatoni. This dish was just full of delectable ingredients and could satisfy any seafood lover’s palates anywhere! Next was one of the 3 Monkeys Cafe’s Signature Dishes, the Wasabi Crab Cakes. For just $16.99 you get 2 very large Homemade Crab Filled Cakes, deep fried with just the right amount of spicy hot. No fillers in those Crab Cakes. Next was the Stuffed Salmon for $16.99. The Salmon was delicate and cooked to perfection, stuffed with Crabmeat, Spinach, and Sun-dried Tomatoes with a Sweet Seafood Cream Sauce. Upon tasting this dish we asked to meet the Chef. This was probably the best Salmon I ever tasted. Infact, my guest who really never favored the taste of Salmon also loved this dish! Chef Tayfun (Ty) Onur was modest about his talents in the kitchen and I almost got him to tell me how he made the stuffing and all those special sauces, but Dottie interjected that it was a Monkey Secret. Oh well, now that I just tasted the best how could I ever make Salmon at home again? I guess I will have to go back to the 3 Monkeys Cafe for that! Of course we could not end our wonderful visit until we tried their Famous Monkey Bread. It did not disappoint! It was a sweet warm bread topped with homemade carmel and a touch of powdered sugar. All that and a cup of coffee will get everyone coming to the 3 Monkeys Cafe for more-Guaranteed!

Speaking of something special…this is the place to be for your Valentines Day weekend with your sweetheart! The 3 Monkeys Cafe will have Blackboard specials like Filet Mignon, Veal Chops, Fish Dishes and more. And come spring there will be Weekend Brunches and new dishes added to their menu!

Still there is more…..The 3 Monkeys Cafe has another entity-The Monkey Courtyard where you can escape the everyday into a Key West-styled outdoor wonderland with a tropical bar! It will re-open on March 17th, weather permitted. You can also have your very own private party there! Whether you choose to have it in the Turn of the Century Bar, The Victorian-Styled Dining Room or out in the Monkey Courtyard it will surely be one great time! For more information about having your party there please call Dottie at (215) 637-MONK (6665) or visit them at
