Olde City Paranormal

Oct 6, 2010

Old_City_Paranormal_3212Ever wonder if the things you hear go bump in the night are for real or perhaps just your imagination?

Well, we thought we would do something different this Halloween and send our feature writer, Krista Doran, to find out! Krista will be traveling to New Jersey with the folks at Olde City Paranormal in Philadelphia to do a real paranormal investigation at the Absecon Lighthouse! There have been many accounts of unexplained phenomenon at the lighthouse dating back to 1905 that has even had SciFi’s GHOST HUNTERS out to investigate. Reports of paranormal activity such as eerie laughter, footsteps when no one was around and even partial apparitions have appeared.

Is the Absecon Lighthouse haunted by its former lighthouse keepers, or perhaps by one of the many people who died in shipwrecks near the Absecon Inlet which has earned the nickname of “Graveyard Inlet?” We’ll find out the truth and bring it all to our readers in the Halloween issue of the Out On The Town which hits the streets on 10/27.

In the meantime, feel free to check out Olde City Paranormal’s website at www.oldecityparanormal.com to read about their past cases. Oh, and next time you are alone and think you hear or see something, just remember – maybe it WASN’T your imagination after all…..

vicThere’s so much to do this Halloween Season and parties a plenty!  I ran into John Strazerri recently who told me about his band “Angry Vic’s” Big Halloween party at The Stadium (5 Points Sports Bar) in Levittown, The Party is on Saturday the 30th and doors open at 8 PM!   There will be T-shirt give away to the first 200 in the door!  A buffet and drink specials all for $5.00. As well a a costume contest and give aways!
Band consists of:
John Strazzeri (Guitar)
Bobby Davidson (Lead Vocals)
Chris Sweeney (Drums)
Vinny Kearns (Guitar)
Kirk Swenson (Bass)

L.R: How  long has “Angry Vic” been playing out, tell us a little about the band?

Kirk: We have been together going on 8 years, Bobby (the Singer) and I have known each other since back in the hair metal days, and I have bounced around from several bands all through the years.
John:: I have been in AV for almost a year, I was asked to join shortly after, and earned my nickname “New Guy” Which by the was they still call me from time to time.
Vin: The band has been around, and playing out for about 8 years now. I have been a member, along with Chris Sweeney for about 3 years now this past June.
Chris. John is our newest member and he’s been around for about a year, but he fit in so well, it feels like he’s been here the whole time. He’s just a twisted as the rest of us!!!
Bobby: It took us a year to get down enough tunes to start playing out and so we’ve been non stop ever since. Black Friday is our anniversary. it all started when I was singing in my friend Victor’s band Feedback. I was also singing in Kirk’s band Pound. Vic’s band kinda fell apart and I wasn’t really into what Kirk’s was doing so, I asked Kirk to come with me to Vic’s. Vic found Bob Shaw in the paper and Bob brought in his pal Dale Massey and then we all jammed. we were together for about a month and Vic realized he didn’t really fit in and graciously bowed out and we moved from Philly to Doylestown, found Steve Kraft and that was that. one night sitting’ out back at Bob’s place, i was telling the guys about one of the guys in Feedback, Mike Abbot. we used to call him Angry Abbot , cuz well, he was always kinda angry about pretty much everything, and then Kirk shouted out” Angry Vic !” and it stuck.

L.R: I know you are primarily a rock cover band, describe your music, how you deliver it and some of the songs you guys play:

Vin: 80’s Hard Rock would pretty much sum that up! The majority is definitely the music everyone in the band grew up pretending to be rock stars listening to! Ratt, Dokken, Motley Crue, Ozzy, W.A.S.P. & many many more!
Kirk: We play the rock you grew up with and songs for the 21 year olds as well! The music your parents made you listen to when you were growing up! Lo!
Chris As far as the music we do, it is mainly the stuff we grew up listening to: Rock, Metal, “Hair Bands”. Poison, Motley Crue, Journey, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc… We do some older songs as well. We just put an “Angry” spin on them first. But, whatever we do, we play our guts out!!! It’s not a good show if our drummer doesn’t leave the club bleeding.
Bobby: We are what we do. We love the music we play and so it shows in our performances!

L. R: Describe to our Party Goers what to expect at this Halloween Party!

Chris: An Earthquake! FUN, FUN, and more FUN! We’ve got a great show planned out, plus. The Stadium ROCKS!!! The bar tenders and wait staff are some of the best people in the bizz!
Vin: In one word “Helluvatime”.
Bobby: The Stadium is being super great about this too! We’ve got a buffet, drink specials, costume contests, free t-shirts to the first 200 at the door, the place is gonna be decked out like crazy, our buds from the band “44 Fridays”  are gonna open up the show,  and we’re gonna end it!
John: Expect a big, one heck of a high energy show!

L. R: What are some other places or dates we can see the band and are you booked for New Years yet?

Chris: We have a few more shows left for 2010:  ~11/13/2010: The Road House Inn
~12/18/2010: Back at The Stadium for our Christmas Show. We decided not to do a New Years show this year and just hang together with our family and friends. But 2011 might be a different story. We also have some BIG things in the works for next year! More to come on that!
Bobby: We may have a Christmas show in the works. just as big as this one too ! And of course there’s always our annual Valentine’s Pajama Party!
Vin: Go to WWW.ANGRYVIC.COM it has all of the upcoming events!

Cav_Eagle_ExpressTAILGATE–noun 1.) the board or gate at the back of a wagon, truck, station wagon, etc., which can be removed or let down for convenience in loading or unloading of picnic items to be consumed before a sporting event. 2.) Bob “Cav” Cavanaugh.

You can find the definition of TAILGATE in the upper lot of the Jethro Parking Lot located a Hail Mary Pass away from Lincoln Financial Field hours and hours before the kickoff of a Philadelphia Eagles Game.

All you need to do is look for the Eagles Express Minibus and yell “Yo Cav!” and you’ve got yourself front row seats on the 50 yard line of the ultimate tailgate. Just follow the roaring sea of green jerseyed fans flocking around Cav’s Catering.

25 years ago, Bob Cavanaugh, a northeast Philly guy and PGW employee was cooking on a small grill for ten guys in the Vet Stadium Parking lot before an Eagle Game.

But the purchase of two big green machines changed all that and his tailgates exploded.

The first, of course was his Eagles Express minibus. “Since I bought the bus, the parties got better,” Cav said.

On the side of the bus, two taps of Coors Light and Yuengling keep everyone happy whether the Eagles win or lose.

But the real deal came in 2008 when Cav bought his six burner Coleman Event Grill (The Godfather of Tailgate grills) with lids that he customized with Eagles logo and had specially made with steel handles.

Sitting on two steel carpenter horses, Cav’s Coleman cranks out his infamous filet mignon sandwiches, sausage and peppers, penne pasta with shrimp in a blush crème sauce, chicken cutlets, roast pork sandwiches on Cacia’s bakery rolls, kielbasa and sauerkraut and shrimp and scallop kabobs. Oh and a roasted pig!

Yeah. Hot dogs it ain’t. And Cav is more than just a guy in the parking lot with a grill. He’s the three-time winner of the Jack Daniel’s Great American Tailgate Party contest. Winner of the Philadelphia Daily News 2004 Tailgate Award. Cav has been featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Food Section and on the Food Network.

And it’s not just the parking lot of the Linc that Cav cooks on-he’s a mobile caterer and has a unique product that brings the ultimate tailgate experience to you. Cav’s Catering is available for all types of events; Weddings, Bachelor- Bachelorette parties, Graduation parties, Birthday parties, Family reunions, outdoor BBQ parties, corporate luncheons, and fundraiser parties. You name it and Cav can cater it.

Go to www.cavseagletailgate.com or call him at 215-301-8337 and you’ll never go back to hot dogs on game day again.

Here’s Cav’s recipe for his award winning Filet Mignon Sandwich:

*Just like the night before Thanksgiving, you brind your bird in sea salt to make it moist and juicy, Cav recommends mixing and combining all marinade ingredients together.

¼ cup of jack Daniels Whiskey

¼ cup of soy sauce

¼ cup Dijon-style mustard

¼ cup minced green onions

¼ cup packed light brown sugar

1 teaspoon of course salt

Dash of Worcestershire Sauce

Pepper to taste.

Now for the meat, Cav uses inch rounds of filet mignon. Grab 2 bell peppers-your choice of red, yellow or green, an onion and a 12 ounce can of the beer of your choice. Cav preaches that Cacia’s Bakery in South Philly is the epitome of tailgate sandwich rolls and your choice of American or provolone is all good.

You’ll want to pound the filet to tenderize and flatten them the night before and throw them in a big gallon zipper bag with your marinade and let them party together overnight. Cut up your peps and onions and plastic baggie them too overnight.

On game day, sauté your peps and onions in beer over medium heat until al dente. All that marinade for the steaks pays off for you. All you gotta do is grill them 3 minutes per side on medium high heat for medium rare. You can figure out the roll and cheese construction. Enjoy, it feeds 6 but you’ll want seconds.

promoshot_urbanachieversHow does one define the term “party band?”  Some would say the term simply means a band that entertains at parties, while others may think the band members like to party.  In the case of this month’s featured band, it means all of that, and then some!

The Urban Achievers is definitely a band that entertains at parties and trust me, they all like to party!  But one thing that is setting them apart from the influx of cover bands out there on the circuit is that they have a really good following of fans.  That being said, you can be pretty certain that when you go see this band, there will be a lot of people there!  This seems to be a touchy subject with some of the bands and clubs alike nowadays.  I mean let’s face it – the days of people lining up to see live bands are dwindling right before our eyes.  Even the so called “well-known” bands aren’t drawing like they used to.  The bands that are surviving and still doing well are the ones who are keeping it real by not making ridiculous promises and also have the talent to put on a great show.  Keeping all of that in mind, The Urban Achievers have all their bases covered!

I spoke to guitar player, Mike Goldman who told me this band really likes to have fun at shows.  “We party right along with our peeps.  We love to drink with everyone and have fun with them – it just gets everyone in the mood.”  The music they play is mostly Classic Rock while throwing in some modern tunes here and there and they even have some originals.  The band plays at some great rooms too, which happen to be some of the Out On The Town’s favorites, such as Paddy Whacks, Curran’s, Reale’s and The Ashton Pub.  They also break off and do some solo and duo acts Mike explained to me, which keeps everyone actively playing music.

If you would like to get out and see this band, I definitely recommend that you do.  They are all solid players with one thing in mind – BRINGING THE PARTY!  Their next show is at Paddy Whacks on South Street on 10/8 at 10:00 pm.  Paddy Whacks is a great place to see a band.  The staff there is exceptional, the food is tremendous, the prices are very reasonable and there is parking in the square right across the street.  You can’t go wrong!  If you can’t make this show, then make sure you see them at Curran’s Tacony location on 11/26 at 9:30 pm.  The Urban Achievers band is:  Mike Goldman: Guitar, keys, vocals and harmonica, Tim Schmid: Lead singer, Dan Leonard:  Lead guitar, Pat Schickling: Bass, Brian Sabec: Drums and Walt Bartle: Vocals.  Please join their page on Facebook!
