BANDS TO WATCH!!!

Jul 17, 2010

by Mike Vagnoni

Steamroller Picnic- Keeping the crowds dancing and having fun doing it!
steamroller-picnicSo what keeps this Steamroller Picnic going? Easy answer – Just good times and good music and really that is what it’s all about for the band that has been performing for well over 15 years now. They are one of a few premier bands that can boast well over 2000 shows and this puts them into the top 3% of successful bands nationwide. Keeping up with the trends, the style, and what people like – knowing what to play in front of whatever kind of audience they may be in front of. “So far the summer has been excellent. We are playing some of our favorite spots like the OD in Sea Isle and Joe Pop’s in LBI. Along with those we have been hitting Bally’s Beach Bar, Nardi’s, House of Blues and Flip Flopz to name a few” boast Justin De Fazio( Judge) the guitar player for the band. The line up is Jean Paul lead vocals, Vega bass and vocals, Judge on guitar, Cliff on drums and vocals.“This line up is one of the strongest you find in a working band today. I have been in the band virtually since inception. We have seen several line-up changes and I can honestly say that the present one is the strongest” Judge says. The band plays the kind of music everyone can relate to from Tom Petty to Nine Inch Nails. Every show is so special to Steamroller Picnic. “The Feeling we all get on stage is what makes us continue to do this year after year. It is such a trip to see the same faces coming out to see us time after time and we like meeting new people from each show we do.” These guys are experts at what they do best and that is to play the music – Here are some up coming shows to see them in action:

July 15th -The Penthouse,
July 17th The Ocean Drive,
July 24th Boneyard Trio,
July 30th Bally’s Beach Bar.

All The Points
In the spring of 2010, four local musicians came together with one goal in mind which was to simply create great music. The result of that creation became the birth of a really exciting new original band from Philly called All The Points. This group of talented youngl_a76f0d3803c14a22a9affed3179957e1 musicians features George Doran on Vocals and Guitar, Kevin Lederer on Bass, Justin Ruppert on Drums and Edu Zancanaro on Guitar. They have just finished their first single “One Day At A Time” recorded at Cambridge Sound Studios by Grammy Nominated Producer Jim Salamone. The feedback for their song has been very positive and the reviews have been excellent. You can take a listen yourself to see what we mean at www.myspace.com/allthepointsmusic. Their next live performance will be Sunday, August 8th at The Trocadero, located at 10th & Arch Streets in Philadelphia. Even though this band is young, don’t let that fool you. Their music has a mature sound that rivals anything else you hear out there today. All The Points is definitely a band to keep your eye on, and you heard it here first! The Out On The Town is, and always will be, dedicated to bringing our readers only the best in live entertainment. Check this band out – you won’t be disappointed!

jokerswild_promoIt’s been a crazy beginning of summer so far, so my husband and I, with our friends Patty and Shawn, decided to check out a new place that everyone has been talking about called Dean Casmirri’s Colonial Inn, over on Beaver Street in Penndel. It’s an out-of-the-way place along the Neshaminy Creek and just the kind of place we were looking for last Saturday night to beat the heat. We pulled up and heard some live music playing outside and took a walk back onto their private and secluded deck area. The place was hopping! There were a bunch of people back there dancing and having a great time, so we decided to sit and stay a while. The band was Jokers Wild, and I am happy to say we’ve decided to feature them in this month’s issue.

For any of you that read this article every month, you’ve probably noticed that I will go from writing about an original band to a real well-known cover band to a lesser known but up and coming band. I like to keep a good variety going so that it appeals to many people. After hearing this band Jokers Wild and seeing how the people reacted to them, I thought they would be the perfect subject for this month’s In the Spotlight. I spoke to their leader and rhythm guitar player, Mike Hope who explained to me that they are really having a lot of fun just playing all the music they group up listening to on the radio. Jokers Wild plays a nice blend of music from 70’s Classic Rock to heavy Modern Rock and well as some Blues. Mike told me “we’ll go right from playing Hotel California to Metallica. We like to appeal to a broad audience so we’ll play a little of everything.”

Mike was a long time, on-the-scene musician and had been away for a few years when he deiced to put Jokers Wild together. He assembled a band that he felt had the talent to progress into something that everyone will really like and so far so good! They have now been playing the local circuit since January of this year and have been making many people sit up and listen. Although they don’t play more than 2 or 3 times a month, Mike told me they are taking things slow and really working on their sound to get things just right. “We really like playing the heavier stuff; Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy – you’ll never hear us playing any of the sappy stuff.” I liked that saying myself, (I use it in my own marketing!) because too many people ARE playing the same old songs. It’s ALWAYS nice to hear a band that takes the time to learn and play something different for a change. The members of the band are Mike Hope on Rhythm guitar, Harry Phron on Lead Vocals, Joe “Rip Riley” Ellsworth on bass, Shawn Young on Drums and Billy Ba on Lead Guitar. Jokers Wild is a unique blend of talent that gets the job of rocking the crowd done!

Jokers Wild will be playing a benefit for a really great cause on July 25, and I urge everyone to help support it! It’s for the Bensalem School District’s music program and the proceeds raised will be used to help KEEP MUSIC IN SCHOOLS. It’s a family event, so bring the kiddies for a day of fun at The Newportville Fire Company. There will be live music by Joker’s Wild, Wicked Stranger and Tommy Spirk of the Richards Brothers Band. There will also be moon bounces, a dunk tank and a real Army Tank so plan for a very fun day! This event starts at 1:00 pm and ends at 6:00 pm and tickets are just $25. This is a great way to help support local music and a very good cause at the same time!

So if you are looking for a “good-time” band, be sure to go hang out and have some drinks with Jokers Wild. You can view their schedule and take a listen to them now on their Facebook page called Jokers Wild Bucks County.

With our sincere apologies to the ultimate Parrothead Jimmy Buffet:

“I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer”

giant-burgerThere is something about the summertime that makes you wanna hit the backyard and grill a burger in your Speedo (hey champ, the thong goes in the back!) flip flops and top off your beefcake masterpiece with all the fixings in your fridge. But sometimes, you gotta get out for a beer and a burger and these local places are grillmasters when you’re looking for that two handed, five napkin burger.

It’s summertime and the grillin’ is easy with Celebrity and Iron Chef Bobby Flay opening Bobby’s Burger Palace at 3925 Walnut Street in West Philadelphia. Just in time for summer’s heat wave, the Mulberry Burger is the July Burger of the Month, topped with arugula, basil ketchup, parmesan and mozzarella chesses.

This ain’t your fast food burger thrown together and wrapped up within 60 seconds of ordering. Flay’s beefery is splashed in retro oranges, limes and kitchy-spacey décor and serves above the board burgers of certified angus beef, ground turkey or chicken breast. He accompanies them with sweet potato fries, beer battered onion rings and ten milkshake flavors with an option to spike the thick malty frozen treats with bourbon, rum or vodka. Paradise indeed.

But it might be hard to sing a song about ingredients on Flay’s burger menu with the likes of Queso sauce, avocado relish, watercress, pickled jalapenos and blue corn chips being just some of his choice toppings. And it also might be a tad bit frustrating to warble a tune when your mouth is full.

Good Dog! Good Burger!

At 15th and Locust, you’ll definitely come, sit and stay for the Good Dog Bar’s infamous burgers.

With the décor of framed pics of man and woman’s best friend, chances are you will not be taking a doggie bag home when the Good Dog Burger comes to your table. It’s ½ lb of house ground sirloin, stuffed with Roquefort cheese, topped with carmelized onions and served on a toasted brioche bun for only $11.

All burgers are served with their signature mix of hand-cut shoestring potatoes and the addictive homemade aioli dipping sauce. The applewood smoked bacon is as thick as a belt and ordering medium rare is the epitome of what a burger should be.

For those of you who are like salty Quint, the crusty captain from “Jaws” (remember his best drinking shots line-“Here’s to swimming with bow legged women!”) there is a Salmon Burger grounded with eggs, panko, horseradish, dill, scallions, onions and mustard served with lettuce, tomato and malt vinegar mayo on a seeded challah roll that is worthy for landlubbers too.

Good Dog staff and bartenders know their craft and brews and the menu as well, so don’t be afraid to ask them what’s good or what they like. Awesome appetizers as well as daily pizzas and quiches round out this bar in Center City.

Up in the Great Northeast

Where’s the Beef? At The Burger Bar, the newest addition to Gallo’s Seafood Restaurant on Roosevelt Boulevard.

For $11.95 you can get something called the “5 Napkin Burger” that is double the beef, double the cheese, lots of bacon and topped with a fried egg. In about an hour or so, you’ll call this the “5 Rolls of Toilet Tissue Burger” but its worth it.

For those of you not competing for a slot at the next competitive eaters event, the regular burgers of fresh ground certified angus chuck with lettuce, tomato and pickle go for $5.95. Try the Burger Bar Special for $7.95 and you’ll get roasted baby bella mushrooms, carmelized onions and gruyee cheese or the Smokehouse Burger with smoked bacon, crispy onion straws, house BBQ sauce topped with cheddar.

With Caesar and chopped salads as well as wings and fries.onion rings, there is plenty of choices on this menu. Even giving a nod to Gallo’s bread and butter of under the sea dishes, The Burger Barn has Flash Fried Calamari and Lump Crab Cake Sandwiches. Did I mention a full beer bar and cocktails? And a spiked milkshake called the Knight Rider of chocolate ice cream, kahula chocolate liquer and crushed Oreo cookies. Yep, somewhere, David Hasselhoff lost his pants and can’t find the keys to the KITT car………

The Epitome of a Beer and a Burger

Memphis Tap Room makes their $9 cheeseburger very simple. The menu states: Pick your cheese, lettuce, tomato.

What comes out to your table is one of the best bar burgers in the city with juices dripping out of the center and cheese melting into the palm of your hand. Go ahead, lick your fingers.

Chef Jesse Kimball is known for the menu items like fried pickles, crawdad doughnuts, pilsner brined wings and the chicken fried chicken but his burgers are one of the best kept secrets around. Biting into the burger, your mouth is treated to ground beef so tender and flavorful, you might wonder if you’re eating filet mignon. Hand formed and not packed so dense that you get the hockey puck effect, Memphis Tap Room wait staff will perfectly pair up your burger with the right brew to wash it down. Can’t decide? The  beer sampler is always a winner and assists you in knowing what tastes you like and favor.
