As a musician myself and also the feature writer of the Out On The Town’s “In The Spotlight” segment, I get to meet a lot of really good local musicians. It’s always great making new friends and seeing the many very talented acts that are right here in the Philly area. One of those bands is The Seven Band.

The members of this band however, are not “new” friends of mine. I have known CJ and Timmy since I was in high school. In fact, I don’t think that CJ even knows that he was one of the first people to inspire me to perform. We had a lot of fun back in those days and I always knew CJ would continue to play music for the rest of his life. He has that rare gift of true talent and honest love for music. All 3 of the O’Neill brothers are very talented musicians and now the legacy continues with CJ’s son Chris James, who we’ll get to in a bit!

After first starting out as Old No. 7 back in the mid ‘80s, the band has gone through many changes. Current members CJ, Timmy and Jeff played for many years in Old No. 7 and built a great following as one the most recognized cover band names in the Philly area. After a few years, CJ went off to play with his original band, Keiper Union and enjoyed a very successful career opening for acts such as Meatloaf and Blue Oyster Cult. They were even set to go on tour with Jefferson Starship until the lead singer became ill and they had to cancel the tour. After 5 years with Keiper Union, CJ decided to return to the cover band scene and reform Old No. 7, which is when his son Chris James came on board at the young age of 17. Now the band is simply known as Seven, and features newer members Heather and Joe. I asked CJ why name the band Seven when there are only six members and he replied “the audience is the seventh member.” This band really gets the audience involved in their shows, so it’s only fitting.

Seven is a band that can go from playing Top 40 Dance music, right into some heart-pounding rock making it look effortless and with Chris James now fronting the band, Seven has taken on a new persona. Like CJ, Chris also has that rare talent and is an extremely gifted singer/songwriter. Following in his father’s footsteps, Chris has embarked on a very successful career in writing original music and has already opened up for Tim Reynolds (Dave Mathews Band), Michelle Branch and Jefferson Airplane. Chris continues to play solo acoustic shows around the area and you can hear some of his music on their website right now by going to www.thesevenband.com. You can also check out Chris and CJ’s acoustic show, now every Friday night at McStew’s Happy Hour in Levittown from 6 – 9 pm.

I have seen Seven in action a couple of times and they really are extremely entertaining, well structured and professional in every way. They are all talented, versatile musicians and a lot of fun to watch. From Heather’s awesome voice to Timmy’s ass-kicking drums, it is always a treat to see Seven play. I recommend checking them out especially to see Timmy come out from behind the drums to sing Run DMC’s “Tricky” or even to check out their tour bus – the Crazy Train! This is a band that does it up right and in this writer’s opinion, there are only a handful of cover bands in the area that come close to having the onstage chemistry that Seven does. Very few bands can achieve this because it’s something that develops through hard work, friendship and a true bond.

Seven is Chris James on lead guitar and vocals, CJ on bass and vocals, Heather on vocals, Jeff percussion, keys, guitar and vocals, Joe guitar and vocals and Timmy on the tin cans. You can catch Seven playing in great rooms like Kenny’s Spirited Eatery in Southampton, Havana’s in Newtown and there will be a huge St Patty’s Day party featuring Seven at Bailey’s on March 17, 2010. They also do a lot of benefits to help out local veterans and their community. Seven is the perfect choice for weddings, private parties or corporate events. If you would like to get more information on the band you can do so by going to their website www.thesevenband.com or by calling 267-984-3349.

all_0132MTV “PUNKS OUT” WHEN ASKED TO PULL CLIP OFJERSEY SHORE’S SNOOKIE GETTING SUCKER PUNCHED

MTV knew it was courting controversy with its new reality show Jersey Shore, which stars eight of the “hottest, tannest, craziest Guidos” who live and party together for a summer, but a whole new level of criticism is sure to come when the epsiode in which one of the stars, Snookie, got punched in the face by a random man at a bar aired.

MTV caved under pressure from sponsors and Violence Against Women Groups and pulled the clip which they has promoted all week.
MTV..who started all the reality crap with REAL WORLD many years ago had now succumbed to the monster they had created. To make MTV look even more cowardl E! Entertainment Television repeatedly aired the clip on their Talk Soup program an estimated 12 times. The clip was shown on every major Tv news show..everywhere but MTV.

Whats your opinion? Out on the Town wants to know. E mail us and tell us what you think..and what you think of Jersey Shore. Oh, BTW..Jersey Shore is averaging 2.3 Million viewers a show! It is a major hit and the cast recently hosted a segment of MTV’s New Years Eve Blast.

One thing is for sure. Guido’s are in for 2010..and Jersey Shore will rule as long as MTV has the balls to let it play out and tell it like it is.

3199_82305430881_82299515881_2288028_6227336_nIt’s rare anymore that you find a DJ with passion, charisma, high energy, and the ability to read a crowd but for the past 7 years DJ Marco seems to do it with ease. His enthusiasm to make every event a memorable one has opened many doors for him in this past year alone. “I don’t want to just throw an event; I want to make a memory. I want someone to say Wow DJ Marco just gave me a night to remember.”

Working various bars throughout Northeast Philly and spreading to the suburbs, DJ Marco has an uncanny knowledge of music and seems to know what his crowd wants to hear. “I feed off of the room. It’s easy to sit behind the booth, put a playlist together, stand around and call it a night but how long will that last? Most of my events are ideas that I have along with interaction and responses from the people I play for. The coolest part about that is that I’m my own promoter so my effort and networking reflects my turnout.”

And those successful events range from a 90’s pajama party that he calls Ninety Night Sleep Tight. He also did an event that would reach all audiences by introducing Pop Life, From The Beatles to Britney the title says it all as DJ Marco touched everything from the 1960’s pop music to the current pop artist. Although his proudest accomplishment as a DJ has to be his biggest event to date, A Royal Celebration, Prince & Michael Jackson “In the Northeast it’s a challenge to try new things and have the audience believe in them but when I put over 300 people into Flukes back in February and then another 250 in Smoke Eaters in August, I thought to myself, this could be something BIG.” Marco also noted that when Michael Jackson died this past year it was an honor for one of his friends to tell him this “my friend told me when MJ died, he thought of me because he knew I could be the only one to throw a memorial party.” And that’s just what he did 2 weeks after M.J.’s death by putting over 150 people into Roosevelt’s for The MemoRoyal Celebration. “Let’s just say I never wanted to throw that party.” he added.

Currently DJ Marco can be seen on Wednesday nights at General Grant’s, Friday nights he rotates weekly between Diego’s Bar and starting January 8th at McStew’s in Levittown, and on Saturdays at the Ashton Pub. As for his resolution for 2010, “I look forward to the year ahead. I look to expand on my events in such places as McStew’s up in Levittown and Diego’s Bar in Bridesburg and I also look to branch out into the city so more and more people can enjoy what I do and see the energy and passion I have. Music is the soundtrack of life so why not enjoy it while we’re living.”

Marco is available for private bookings and is capable of doing any event, if you’re interested in contacting him or would like more information on his events and what he can provide, feel free to contact him at 267-549-7328 or look for him on Facebook at “DJ Marco (Fan Page)”
