JamisonAs St. Patrick’s Day approaches many of us will want to enjoy the high spirited or teary ballads that only traditional Irish music offers. If you are like me however, after 5 or 6 songs, you are ready to move onto something else. After all, variety is the spice of life! There is an Irish band from the Philly area that has taken that into consideration and decided to mix Rock, Reggae, Pop and other styles with Irish tradition – and that band is Jamison.

When it comes to Irish music in this town, we all know that Jamison is one of the most beloved bands that come to mind. Apparently, this is not just a local love affair. Jamison entered an online Battle of the Bands contest, sponsored by the Strangford Lough Beer Company and won the title of Best Irish Band as voted by people all over the world. I spoke to Lead Vocalist and Guitar player, Frank Daly who explained “this was an international competition. Irish bands from all over the world sent in videos that were narrowed down to the best 30 and were then posted online for people to vote on”. Jamison came through on top and to celebrate, they will be flying out to Las Vegas in April to perform at McFadden’s in the Rio Hotel! Congrats to the band from The OOT and all its readers – this truly is a great accomplishment!
Great accomplishments are not new to Jamison, though. They have appeared on Fox Good Day Philadelphia’s promotion of the 2005 Penn’s Landing Irish Festival, they were also the Headline band for the Phoenixville Concert Series, The Philadelphia Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, Cape May County’s Irish Fall Festival (Wildwood NJ), the Delmarva Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration, and Philadelphia’s Running of the Santa’s, just to name a few.
Jamison has had songs featured on Midwest Radio in Ireland and they were awarded “Best Band” in 2009 by the Mt Holly St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. More locally, you can find Jamison playing venues including The Electric Factory, Citizens Bank Park, and many festivals. Some of the smaller, more intimate venues you can see them play are Kildare’s, Brittingham’s, Paddy Whacks, and Finnegan’s Wake.
Jamison is a group of guys who wanted to perform Irish music with a twist. As Frank told me, “there are lots of Irish bands doing cover music, but not many Rock bands who do Irish music.” They perform a high energy show that mixes various types of song styles yet they never stray from their Irish roots. When you go to see Jamison, be prepared to dance from start to finish. Frank told me, “You will definitely work up a sweat at one of our shows!”
The members of Jamison are Frank Daly – Guitar, Mandolin, Tin Whistle and Lead Vocals; John O’Callaghan – Guitar, Tin Whistle, Banjo and Lead Vocals; Sean Callaghan – Drums and Percussion; Dave Lynd – Bass Guitar, Moog Pedals and Backup Vocals and C.J. Mills – Fiddle, Mandolin and Backup Vocals. You can read up on the band and view their schedule by visiting their website at www.jamisoncelticrock.com. On St. Patrick’s Day, Jamison will be appearing at Brittingham’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in Whitemarsh, PA during the day and then they will be at Kildare’s in West Chester from 9 pm – 1 am.
Jamison is definitely a band that can be appreciated all year long, not just this time of the year. If you are looking for a night of dancing to high energy cover songs with a mash-up of Irish and other styles, go check them out. You may want to bring an extra shirt though!

bandpic2The band Wild Child is becoming the new band to watch for 2011. The group is fronted by vocalist extraordinaire Alexa Raquel and really does bring a high level of entertainment wherever they play. “We’re a rock band first,” states Alexa, “and that’s what people notice first about us. We started doing some Lady GaGa songs in the band Sapphire Blue (known as “Sapphire”), which is an upscale band that I sing for, and people really liked it. Now, we want to bring that same show into the club scene so more people can see it. The band is made up of Marc Pepe on bass, Greg Mangoni on guitar, Ricky Blong on drums… and myself doing all the jumpin’ and screamin’ LOL. I had a chance to play overseas last year and the whole time I was thinking, ‘I can’t wait to get home.’ Its kind of nice since they really appreciate American rock and roll, which will be cool since we are scheduled to play in Bamberg, Germany in a few months, but things are way more cutting edge in the states.”
Alexa continues, “I think when people see the band play, especially our tribute to GaGa, they’re pretty surprised. The audience for GaGa are right around my own age, so it’s a natural fit. On any given night the band might throw in some Zepplin and maybe even Guns, depending on the crowd. Dance music, especially songs by Madonna, Pink and Katy Perry are also a big part of our show, but again, it really depends on what type of crowd it is. If it’s a more rockin’ crowd one night, we’re gonna come in harder. If people are really dancing, we have dance medleys over twenty minutes long. We don’t just try to play the room but also to the people inside that room.”
“The thing we really had to work hard on was our production. We didn’t just run out and buy a couple of flashing lights or speakers on stands, but rather involved the expertise of people who know how to do this. All the lights are run from a laptop and the sound is pretty wicked, if I do say so myself. We see a lot of bands that sound really good but we wanted to involve more sensationalism and movement into our thing, and that’s something you don’t see a lot of these days. I think sometimes the band members wish we could just go up and play, but I’m a trained vocalist and dancer, so I want to get the whole crew involved. It fun, though. That’s the bottom line. We want people to have fun when they come to see us, and it’s certainly less expensive to go to the local nightclub and see us than going out to buy real GaGa tickets at $500.00 a piece. In addition to the whole GaGa thing, we are also working on our second CD, which will be available locally and on iTunes very soon.”

sindiSince 1996, Sindi and Jimmy Raymond have been providing great times and great entertainment for people who love good music. From Classic Rock to some of today’s most popular Top 40 songs, people all over the tri-state area just can’t seem to get enough of this dynamic duo!

I spoke to Sindi and Jimmy and both were extremely sincere when they told me how much they love performing. They have been working together since the early days of their band Funhouse back in the ‘80’s. These two have a definite closeness that everyone can see – onstage and off. They make the audience feel welcome and part of the show by constantly interacting with them, drinking with them and taking the time to get to know them.

When you go to see The Sindi Raymond Band, you better be ready to dance AND rock! They will go from playing Lady Gaga to Pantera and it will simply blow your mind. They have a loyal following of fans that will actually plan their schedules around their shows so that they are there to see what Sindi and Jimmy will do next! They are constantly pushing the boundaries by offering true entertainment that is unlike anything else you will see. There is no set list for these two either – they go into any room with their “balls to the wall” attitude and play the music that particular crowd wants to hear. They offer an arsenal of close to 1,000 songs and will surely please every single person in the room!

You can catch The Sindi Raymond Band and some great places, such as Curran’s Bensalem and Palmyra NJ locations. On Thursdays in February, the full band, including Sindi, Jimmy plus Buddy Cash on Bass and Wayne Sigma on drums will be rocking at Tom & Jerry’s from 10 pm – 2 am. For their full schedule please visit their website at www.sindiraymondband.com.

There’s not much I can say about these guys that most of the OOT readers don’t already know. If having fun while listening to a wide range of really good live music is your thing, then go see The Sindi Raymond band. They are fun, full of energy and are sure to please!

Jamison Celtic Rock

Feb 9, 2011

pp_logoJamison grew out of the Irish-American streets of Northeast Philadelphia in 2003 – a mixed bag of musicians from past popular Irish and cover bands. Since then, Jamison has grown to offer what has been called ‘one of the most high energy shows on the east coast’, with dynamic reels mixed with rock, reggae, modern pop, hiphop dance beats and just about every cover genre – all while never straying far from their Irish roots. At times, Irish dancers seem to appear from nowhere donning Jamison shirts and leading the crowd in jumps and cheers while the band can be seen playing from atop the bar. Fans are sure to leave a show with a sweaty shirt and a level of excitement that few live shows can produce.
Over the years, the band has been featured in Fox Good Day Philadelphia’s promotion of the Penn’s Landing Irish Festival, headlined the Phoenixville Concert Series, rocked the main stage at the 5000+ attended Running of the Santa’s, played the Cape May County Irish Fall Festival (Wildwood NJ), the Delmarva Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration, and of course Philadelphia’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade celebration.
Jamison has had songs featured on Midwest Radio in Ireland, was awarded “Best Band” in 2009 by the Mt Holly St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and more recently, won ‘Best Irish Band in America’ in the Strangford Lough battle of the bands. To celebrate, the band will be flown to Las Vegas to perform at McFadden’s. Jamison WILL be running a huge group trip to Vegas with the band – dates to be announced soon!
Locally, you can find Jamison playing the biggest venues in the area including The Electric Factory, Citizens Bank Park, and festivals, clubs and pubs all over the tri state area. Summer time takes Jamison to the Jersey shore, with regular performance in North Wildwood and Sea Isle City.
This year as the big day for the green approaches, you can catch Jamison just about everywhere. On St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th), Jamison will be rocking Brittingham’s in Lafayette Hill in the afternoon then closing out the night at Kildare’s in West Chester.
Jamison’s full schedule can be found at www.JamisonCelticRock.com

getWhen All is Said and Done, you should Rise Up and support the original members of Octane as they rock the stage once more on Saturday, February 12th at legendary venue Whiskey Tango (1400 Bustleton Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19116). Feeling like they owed it to Octane fans and wishing to just have fun like the good ole days, Brian Bortnick, Brian Quinn, Bobby Pirylis, Greg Tripp, Joe Berndt, and special guest Jordan Demarest will be performing some of Octane’s hottest hits, including I for One, Enemy, and Gasoline. Doors open at 8pm.

Rife with Philadelphia’s musical heritage, don’t miss your chance to experience one of the city’s own legendary rock bands. With tickets $10 in advance and $12 at the door, tickets are selling fast. Tickets can be purchased in advance at WhiskeyTangoTavern.com or directly from BrownPaperTickets.com (search 142754). You may also purchase your tickets directly from any of the guys. For event details, please check out the Octane Reunion Fan Page on Facebook. Just Facebook search “Octane Reunion”.

Dreaming nothing more than becoming a part of a band that embodied all that was missing from music, five local Philadelphians risked everything, abandoning their own steady gigs, to form Octane. As their die-hard fans will attest, Octane continuously broke the mold of traditional “rock bands,” providing a no-frills, no-nonsense, rock ‘n roll sound that was reminiscent of the metal acts of yesteryear.

The band headlined two sold out shows at the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia and was voted #1 Unsigned Band in a Y-100 (WPLY) listeners’ poll in 2004 and 2005. They won Best Original Band and Best Original CD in 2003 and 2004 with the album When All is Said and Done at the Philadelphia Music Awards. When All is Said and Done was released independently and has sold over 20,000 copies. The radio hit song, I For One, had over 1,500 spins on 94.1 WYSP FM (a record number for an unsigned artist). A second single, Gasoline, received over 1,000 spins and was featured on The Dale Earnhardt Jr. / Budweiser NASCAR Year in Review DVD. Five of Octane‘s tracks were on the Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball Video Game soundtrack. Also, the song Enemy from the album Rise Up was chosen as the Number 74 Song of the Decade by ModernRock.com.

You may also recall Octane performing with such notable artists as Sevendust, Fuel, Disturbed, Chevelle, Taproot, Days of the New, Judas Priest, Kid Rock, Sinch, Mudvayne, 3 Doors Down, Slash’s Snakepit, Earshot, Nonpoint, Gene Simmons, and Constantine Maroulis.

For Octane booking inquiries, please contact Shore Bets at 215.884.4357 or visit their website at shorebets.com.

dazeend_promopicSeveral years ago when I started playing in a band, me and the guys decided we wanted to do something different. I had spent 3 years booking bands on my own and during that time, I realized that many of them were doing the same exact thing. They were basically playing the same songs the same boring way. I mean it was to the point where we would literally go to 3 different clubs to see 3 different bands and it all seemed like the same show! So we put something together that truly was different and people loved it. This is part of the problem with the cover band scene in my opinion. Too many bands think it has to be done a certain way, conforming to what everyone else is doing. Thankfully, there are still plenty of bands that “get it”, who are changing things around and working really hard to entertain the crowds. I love to go out and see live music; both cover and original and when the band is unique, it’s even more enjoying. Recently I had the chance to see Daze End, a band from DE and I was really impressed.

Daze End is a 6 piece Power House of energy and music, combined to bring an all new and original spin to songs you’ve always loved. By adding a funky, Reggae , Ska or more Rockin’ sound to a song, Daze End will take a song, strip it down and spit it back out in their own original way.

The band actually has all original roots, starting out as Daze Alone. They enjoyed a solid 10 years of playing their awesome original music from 1994 to 2004. After a few years off from playing as a band, they put together a reunion show in 2008 and since it went so extremely well, bass player, Chris “Soup” Campbell and lead singer, Joel Marcus decided they wanted to continue playing music on a full time basis. The choice to do strictly cover music was difficult for them at first, but by doing it THEIR way, it enables them to be creative while still pleasing the big crowds who come to see them.

I spoke to Chris about all of this and I was really able to relate to what Daze End is trying to accomplish. Although they have only been together for 2 years, they truly believe in changing the way things have been done by many bands that have preceded them. Chris is so dedicated to this project that he even quit his job to play music full time. He explained to me that “We are definitely re-inventing the cover band. It’s not just a line. When you come to see Daze End, it’s going to be a different experience. We have great stage presence and we always get the crowd involved. It’s a true SHOW”

It is refreshing to me as a musician who believes in the same ideas but also as a person who appreciates seeing live music. I like to go out and just sit back and enjoy live music, but I also like to be challenged. I really believe that most people who go to see live music feel the same way. People are tired of the same thing over and over, and Daze End is one band that sees this. They offer great live music that is danceable; while creating a party atmosphere that will always insure a good time for everyone.

The band is currently gearing up for a very busy spring and summer schedule and will be rocking places like Seacrets in Ocean City, MD, The Hilton Casino in AC as well as the Sands in Bethlehem and Mohican Sun Casino in Wilkes Barre. Daze End is Joel Marcus on lead vocals, Bobby Enlow on guitar and vocals, Travis Hill on Trombone, Matt Helzler on the sax, Mike Hostler on drums and Chris “Soup” Campbell on bass and vocals. You can visit their website at www.dazeend.net or on Facebook. Daze End is available for parties, weddings, corporate events, casinos and bars/clubs. You can book the band by contacting Al Geary at Shore Bets 215-884-4357.
