vicThere’s so much to do this Halloween Season and parties a plenty!  I ran into John Strazerri recently who told me about his band “Angry Vic’s” Big Halloween party at The Stadium (5 Points Sports Bar) in Levittown, The Party is on Saturday the 30th and doors open at 8 PM!   There will be T-shirt give away to the first 200 in the door!  A buffet and drink specials all for $5.00. As well a a costume contest and give aways!
Band consists of:
John Strazzeri (Guitar)
Bobby Davidson (Lead Vocals)
Chris Sweeney (Drums)
Vinny Kearns (Guitar)
Kirk Swenson (Bass)

L.R: How  long has “Angry Vic” been playing out, tell us a little about the band?

Kirk: We have been together going on 8 years, Bobby (the Singer) and I have known each other since back in the hair metal days, and I have bounced around from several bands all through the years.
John:: I have been in AV for almost a year, I was asked to join shortly after, and earned my nickname “New Guy” Which by the was they still call me from time to time.
Vin: The band has been around, and playing out for about 8 years now. I have been a member, along with Chris Sweeney for about 3 years now this past June.
Chris. John is our newest member and he’s been around for about a year, but he fit in so well, it feels like he’s been here the whole time. He’s just a twisted as the rest of us!!!
Bobby: It took us a year to get down enough tunes to start playing out and so we’ve been non stop ever since. Black Friday is our anniversary. it all started when I was singing in my friend Victor’s band Feedback. I was also singing in Kirk’s band Pound. Vic’s band kinda fell apart and I wasn’t really into what Kirk’s was doing so, I asked Kirk to come with me to Vic’s. Vic found Bob Shaw in the paper and Bob brought in his pal Dale Massey and then we all jammed. we were together for about a month and Vic realized he didn’t really fit in and graciously bowed out and we moved from Philly to Doylestown, found Steve Kraft and that was that. one night sitting’ out back at Bob’s place, i was telling the guys about one of the guys in Feedback, Mike Abbot. we used to call him Angry Abbot , cuz well, he was always kinda angry about pretty much everything, and then Kirk shouted out” Angry Vic !” and it stuck.

L.R: I know you are primarily a rock cover band, describe your music, how you deliver it and some of the songs you guys play:

Vin: 80’s Hard Rock would pretty much sum that up! The majority is definitely the music everyone in the band grew up pretending to be rock stars listening to! Ratt, Dokken, Motley Crue, Ozzy, W.A.S.P. & many many more!
Kirk: We play the rock you grew up with and songs for the 21 year olds as well! The music your parents made you listen to when you were growing up! Lo!
Chris As far as the music we do, it is mainly the stuff we grew up listening to: Rock, Metal, “Hair Bands”. Poison, Motley Crue, Journey, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc… We do some older songs as well. We just put an “Angry” spin on them first. But, whatever we do, we play our guts out!!! It’s not a good show if our drummer doesn’t leave the club bleeding.
Bobby: We are what we do. We love the music we play and so it shows in our performances!

L. R: Describe to our Party Goers what to expect at this Halloween Party!

Chris: An Earthquake! FUN, FUN, and more FUN! We’ve got a great show planned out, plus. The Stadium ROCKS!!! The bar tenders and wait staff are some of the best people in the bizz!
Vin: In one word “Helluvatime”.
Bobby: The Stadium is being super great about this too! We’ve got a buffet, drink specials, costume contests, free t-shirts to the first 200 at the door, the place is gonna be decked out like crazy, our buds from the band “44 Fridays”  are gonna open up the show,  and we’re gonna end it!
John: Expect a big, one heck of a high energy show!

L. R: What are some other places or dates we can see the band and are you booked for New Years yet?

Chris: We have a few more shows left for 2010:  ~11/13/2010: The Road House Inn
~12/18/2010: Back at The Stadium for our Christmas Show. We decided not to do a New Years show this year and just hang together with our family and friends. But 2011 might be a different story. We also have some BIG things in the works for next year! More to come on that!
Bobby: We may have a Christmas show in the works. just as big as this one too ! And of course there’s always our annual Valentine’s Pajama Party!
Vin: Go to WWW.ANGRYVIC.COM it has all of the upcoming events!

promoshot_urbanachieversHow does one define the term “party band?”  Some would say the term simply means a band that entertains at parties, while others may think the band members like to party.  In the case of this month’s featured band, it means all of that, and then some!

The Urban Achievers is definitely a band that entertains at parties and trust me, they all like to party!  But one thing that is setting them apart from the influx of cover bands out there on the circuit is that they have a really good following of fans.  That being said, you can be pretty certain that when you go see this band, there will be a lot of people there!  This seems to be a touchy subject with some of the bands and clubs alike nowadays.  I mean let’s face it – the days of people lining up to see live bands are dwindling right before our eyes.  Even the so called “well-known” bands aren’t drawing like they used to.  The bands that are surviving and still doing well are the ones who are keeping it real by not making ridiculous promises and also have the talent to put on a great show.  Keeping all of that in mind, The Urban Achievers have all their bases covered!

I spoke to guitar player, Mike Goldman who told me this band really likes to have fun at shows.  “We party right along with our peeps.  We love to drink with everyone and have fun with them – it just gets everyone in the mood.”  The music they play is mostly Classic Rock while throwing in some modern tunes here and there and they even have some originals.  The band plays at some great rooms too, which happen to be some of the Out On The Town’s favorites, such as Paddy Whacks, Curran’s, Reale’s and The Ashton Pub.  They also break off and do some solo and duo acts Mike explained to me, which keeps everyone actively playing music.

If you would like to get out and see this band, I definitely recommend that you do.  They are all solid players with one thing in mind – BRINGING THE PARTY!  Their next show is at Paddy Whacks on South Street on 10/8 at 10:00 pm.  Paddy Whacks is a great place to see a band.  The staff there is exceptional, the food is tremendous, the prices are very reasonable and there is parking in the square right across the street.  You can’t go wrong!  If you can’t make this show, then make sure you see them at Curran’s Tacony location on 11/26 at 9:30 pm.  The Urban Achievers band is:  Mike Goldman: Guitar, keys, vocals and harmonica, Tim Schmid: Lead singer, Dan Leonard:  Lead guitar, Pat Schickling: Bass, Brian Sabec: Drums and Walt Bartle: Vocals.  Please join their page on Facebook!

ElementK_promopicThere are an abundance of party/wedding bands out there in the tri-state area and all are highly talented musicians offering some of the best entertainment money can buy. But there is a new band on the scene that has really been making waves, not only for their excellent musicianship, but also for their refreshing approach towards providing entertainment for any private function.  This band is Element K!

I spoke to guitarist Kevin Burns who explained to me that Element K offers more than most wedding bands and we’ll get to that in a moment.  First, I would like to tell you all a little bit about the band.  Element K, who is managed by The Shore Bets Agency, has been together now for 2 years and has been playing some great local venues mainly in the NJ and DE areas.   Since the word is now out about this band, they have been spreading their wings and are now booking more and more rooms all over the tri-state area and even down into MD and VA.  Element K has a very strong presence onstage and plays music from all genres.  As Kevin explained to me, “we tend to play a little bit of everything.  We mix things up to keep everyone dancing and we never go into a room with any type of pre-conceived idea of what we will play.  We have a set-list, but it always depends on the crowd that is there because we like to play to suit the taste of the people in the room.”  Believe me, Kevin and his band mate & bass player, Chris Louie definitely know how to work a room.  As former members of the local band Chorduroy, they made the decision to leave in order to start a new project, and are really happy with this new line-up.  The addition of their new female vocalist, Kortney Penta who also plays keys, and their hard-hitting drummer Anthony Santiago, has rounded out this band and insured that there is not stopping them!

One thing that sets Element K apart from the rest is the extremely strong vocals from their lead singer, Kortney.  This adorable little red-head previously performed in her college A Cappella group, called The Deltones.  Her high energy and great personality has her pleasing crowds at every venue they play.  “Kortney has been such an asset to this band.  Since she has been with us, we have been getting booked so much easier and her vocals just kick ass,” Kevin told me.  They have been playing some great rooms, too, like Klondike Kate’s and Kildare’s in DE, Harrah’s and the Hilton Beach Bar in Atlantic City, NJ and countless more places coming in the Fall.  Every Thursday, they perform at The Lighthouse in Dewey Beach, DE which has become one of their most favorite places to play.

In addition to awesome musicianship, a professional attitude and looking good, Element K offers something that no other cover bands offer for weddings and private affairs. They are a “one-stop-shop” and provide everything from live music and DJ services to photography and video services and will work with you to create an event that your guests will never forget.  One service that I personally thought would be a hoot at any private party is live band karaoke.  If you have a crazy family and lots of awesome friends like me, I am sure you will like this service too.  Just imagine the fun you could have with this band at your next party!  Check out their website at to see a listing of all the great options that Element K offers that will make your wedding or private affair memorable!  No parties coming up?  No problem!  You can always go see them live at any of the great venues they play because whenever Element K is there, IT IS A PARTY!

MONTEMONTGOMERYPHOTOOnce in a while a musician emerges from the depths of obscurity by taking his talents to new heights while raising the creative bar. For Texas based guitarist Monte Montgomery this could not be a truer statement. With a dozen studio, live and DVD releases under his belt, Montgomery has quietly made a name for himself as a “musician’s musician”, gracing concert stages throughout the U.S. and abroad, earning critical acclaim and public adulation along the way. His awe-inspiring talent has won him praise from an elite group of fellow guitarists ranging from Steve Vai to Eric Johnson. To hear Montgomery’s stunning and electrifying guitar work in the studio is one thing, to hear him live is an event not to be missed. With two years since his last studio release, Montgomery is poised to take his career to the next level as he strategically plans his future.

Montgomery’s humble beginnings found him travelling the country with his free-spirited mother. Dropping out of school after the 7th grade, he gravitated toward the guitar at an early age. Through sheer effort and determination, Montgomery persevered by honing his vocal abilities along the way. “My childhood was basically skipped”, says Montgomery. “I literally used to sit around and play for hours.  I had the opportunity to sit around and play guitar all the time. There were all these guys that played guitar. That’s how I learned, by watching and listening. “

By 1990 Montgomery made his recording debut with a self-titled release. Over the next two decades he released a collection of studio and live albums, which included Lost & Found (1993), 1st & Repair (1998), Mirror (1999), Wishing Well (2001), The Story Of Love (2003), Architect (2004), Monte Montgomery (2008), Live at the Caravan of Dreams (2002) and New & Approved (2003). A live DVD entitled At WorkPlay was released in 2005.

Like most great artists, Montgomery painstakingly built a following of fans of all ages that were instantly captivated by his abilities on the guitar. There was no question that fate was at play. “I never woke up and said, what am I supposed to be doing with my life?” says Montgomery. “I always knew, even before I played guitar, that I was going to be doing music, one way or another.” Influenced by Lindsey Buckingham, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Mark Knopfler and Michael Hedges, Montgomery continues to embrace any opportunity to expand his artistry. “You take a little bit from everybody”, says Montgomery. “Everybody that I listen to gets filed away and channeled at some point. That’s what makes me the player I am. I’m really an amalgamation of everybody that has inspired me. Early on I was pretty much obsessed with Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac”, added Montgomery. “I learned a lot of stuff from that band other than just guitar playing – like dynamics, like how to bring songs down to a whisper and how to drive through a song.”

The turning point for Montgomery came in 1999 when, as a virtual unknown, he appeared on PBS’s Austin City Limits. This proved to be the boost he needed to take his career to a wider audience. Montgomery recorded and performed with abandon, staying focused on the task at hand, “To be the best he could be at his craft.” National media attention took notice and in 2004 Guitar Player Magazine’s listed Montgomery as one of the “The Top 50 All-Time Greatest Guitarists”. It didn’t hurt that he had won the “Best Acoustic Guitar Player” award at the SXSW Festival’s Austin Music Awards seven years in a row (1998-2004), a feat that has yet to be topped.

In March 2009 Montgomery’s personal life was shattered when his twenty-one year old daughter was tragically shot to death. In spite of the overwhelming odds of success and personal adversity, Montgomery has never given up faith in his calling and how he wants to be perceived. “I’m not up on stage trying to convey passion. It’s just what happens when I put a guitar on”, says Montgomery. “You don’t get listening to me on a CD. It’s not like seeing me live. There’s something about being in front of an audience. That’s just what I do best. I really enjoy what I do, and I am who I am because of the way my life went.”  For more info on Monte Montgomery go to
