Just off of Bellevue Ave and Trenton Road, and along the Neshaminy Creek in the quaint little town of Hulmeville, PA is a wonderful place to relax and unwind called Dean Casmirri’s Colonial Inn.  The building is tucked away among the tall shady trees along the creek.  It’s a great place to spend outside enjoying the views of the falls while having dinner or sipping on a cold beer this summer.  The Tiki Bar at The Colonial is the perfect spot to meet up with friends or maybe even a first date.  Whatever the occasion may be, you will certainly enjoy yourself.

Dean Casmirri’s Colonial Inn offers something for everyone.  Their food is delicious and the atmosphere is fun and inviting.  It’s one of those rare finds, just off the beaten path you always hear people talking about.  All of the food is served hot & fresh and everything is homemade.  I spoke to owner Dean Casmirri and he told me “The food here is always big hit with everyone.”  I can see why.  I have been there many times and it’s always delicious.  They serve everything from soup and apps to full course dinners including meat, poultry, pasta and seafood items.  “The Clams Casino is a crowd favorite and our mushrooms stuffed with Crab Imperial are fantastic.”  Dean explained.  Some of the other delicious appetizers are the Shrimp and Scallops Wrapped in Bacon, the Creamy Crab Dip, served with a Brandy cream sauce, garlic toast and tortilla chips, and the Hawaiian Coconut Shrimp served with a tropical dipping sauce.  As far as the entrees go, they have a great selection of favorites including Fresh Slow Roasted Turkey, served with stuffing, mashed potatoes and veggies, Fresh Veal Cutlet Parmigiana and the 8oz Grilled Filet Mignon.  The prices are awesome too.  All entrees include Soup or Salad and are priced between $12.99 and $15.99!  Dean Casmirri’s Colonial Inn offers great weekly specials, too.  Come in Sunday through Wednesday for dinner, and for just $9.99 you can have your entrée, plus soup or salad, 2 veggies or pasta AND dessert.  We are talking nice dinners too, like Homemade Lasagna, Lemon Chicken & Tilapia Florentine, just to name a few.  If a Sammy or Burger is more your speed, there is plenty to choose from and all are priced between $6 and $10.  Nightly food and drink specials are plentiful, including Mondays, $2.00 Coors Light Pints; Tuesdays, $3.00 Creek Fries 9 to 11 pm; Wednesday it’s Dollar Dog Night!  On Thursday 10 pm till Midnight get your fill of $1.00 Domestic Pints, $2.00 Domestic Bottles and $3.00 Shots.  During the weekend it’s time to unwind and you can do it right at The Colonial!  Friday they offer

$3.00 Sweet Tea Vodka Lemonade and $3.00 Bubble Gum Blasts all day!  Saturdays and every night of the week, its time for the 1-2-3 Special 11 pm until Midnight, and on

Sunday its $2.00 Domestic Pints all day and $2.00 (6) Wings all day.  The Colonial Inn is also a great place for entertainment on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with either live acoustic music, Karaoke or the DJ spins your favorite tunes. SEAFOOD & RIGATONIAt the 3 Monkeys Cafe; they don’t “Monkey Around” when it comes to a superb dining experience. Owned by Gavin, Mike & Ed, they are the 3 Monkeys! They grew up together and aspired to this wonderful little place across from the Torresdale Train Station, in Northeast Philadelphia (9645 James Street). Its a hop, skip and jump from the Olde City/Center City area. And it has the “feel” of being at one of those hip, hot spots without the hassle of traffic and parking!

The atmosphere is simply wonderful. You can sit at the one of a kind 1890’s hand-carved bar and enjoy a variety of seasonal and Craft Brews or have a specialty drink like the Monkeytini-while dining on their delicious fare. Or you can dine in the formal Victorian-styled dining room, where my guest and I ventured in. It was very cozy and intimate. We sat by the fireplace-perfect for this particularly snowy night. Dotty, Manager, along with Katie, our waitress and the rest of the staff were just as heartwarming-friendly, smiling and the service was spot on. The menu had a variety of hunger pleasing items everything from soup, sandwiches, and wraps to full entrees. They even offer a kids menu for the little Chimps in your life.

Finding it difficult to choose, Dottie suggested we try a few of their signature appetizers. We had the Fresh Cut Homemade French Fries with their special Monkey Mayo Sauce, Asian Potstickers with Sweet Chili Sauce, Pierogies with Sour Cream, and Drunken Shrimp with Sweet Chili Sauce. Our favorite hands down was the Drunken Shrimp. Jumbo Beer-battered Shrimp with Panko bread crumbs, dipped in their amazing Sweet Chili Sauce. It was simply delicious! This appetizer typically comes with their fabulous homemade French Fries and for just $12.99 it is well worth it!
Next came our sampling of their entrees which came with a house salad, fresh vegetables and your choice of rice or a potato. We went with the sampling of three wonderful entrees. First we tried the Seafood & Rigatoni (18.99). This dish had Extra Large New Zealand Mussels, Sumptuous Scallops, Jumbo Shrimp, Sun-dried tomatoes, Prosciutto, Shallots, and Capers in a Garlic White Wine Sauce over Rigatoni. This dish was just full of delectable ingredients and could satisfy any seafood lover’s palates anywhere! Next was one of the 3 Monkeys Cafe’s Signature Dishes, the Wasabi Crab Cakes. For just $16.99 you get 2 very large Homemade Crab Filled Cakes, deep fried with just the right amount of spicy hot. No fillers in those Crab Cakes. Next was the Stuffed Salmon for $16.99. The Salmon was delicate and cooked to perfection, stuffed with Crabmeat, Spinach, and Sun-dried Tomatoes with a Sweet Seafood Cream Sauce. Upon tasting this dish we asked to meet the Chef. This was probably the best Salmon I ever tasted. Infact, my guest who really never favored the taste of Salmon also loved this dish! Chef Tayfun (Ty) Onur was modest about his talents in the kitchen and I almost got him to tell me how he made the stuffing and all those special sauces, but Dottie interjected that it was a Monkey Secret. Oh well, now that I just tasted the best how could I ever make Salmon at home again? I guess I will have to go back to the 3 Monkeys Cafe for that! Of course we could not end our wonderful visit until we tried their Famous Monkey Bread. It did not disappoint! It was a sweet warm bread topped with homemade carmel and a touch of powdered sugar. All that and a cup of coffee will get everyone coming to the 3 Monkeys Cafe for more-Guaranteed!

Speaking of something special…this is the place to be for your Valentines Day weekend with your sweetheart! The 3 Monkeys Cafe will have Blackboard specials like Filet Mignon, Veal Chops, Fish Dishes and more. And come spring there will be Weekend Brunches and new dishes added to their menu!

Still there is more…..The 3 Monkeys Cafe has another entity-The Monkey Courtyard where you can escape the everyday into a Key West-styled outdoor wonderland with a tropical bar! maindinningroom1The Ashburner Inn Restaurant and Bar graciously invited OOT over for dinner. It is located at 8400 Torresdale Avenue, minutes from I-95. My guest and I were greeted by very friendly and courteous staff including Jane, the Bartender, who generously offered to make me a Chocolate Martini upon our arrival! Yummy and a great stress reliever; made with light and dark Godiva Chocolate Liquor. My guest had a couple of Blue Moons and we were ready to relax and have a great meal. Our waitress, Melissa, was in a happy holiday mood, as was most of the patrons that wined and dined this particular night. The place was beautifully decorated for the holidays giving it a nice ambiance.
Our chef, Hubert, suggested the Seafood Bisque Soup, my guest had the French Onion, both were $5.00 each and were hearty. Perfect for such a cold night. Our appetizers included their special Home-made Potato Skins with Bacon, Cheese & Blue Cheese on the side ($4.95) and the Stuffed Button Mushrooms with Crab Meat ($8.00). Very delicious and made just right! My guest ordered the 10 oz. New York Strip Steak, topped with Garlic and Mushrooms ($17.95), one of the many specials offered for this particular night. I had the “Wood oven roasted specialty”, Mediterranean Tilapia ($16.00). The Tilapia was nicely cooked and topped with Sun Dried Tomatoes, Artichokes, Capers, Fresh Basil, Oregano, Lemon, Olive Oil, and a splash of Pinot Grigio! An interesting combination of ingredients that made up one great meal! Both entrees came with a Baked Potato and Fresh Green Beans. Our little one delighted in the wood fired oven Pizza ($7.00), which happens to be one of their specialties! No wonder-every bite was simply delicious. By the time dinner was completed we forced ourselves to have dessert, in which we shared. We had the Warm Brownie with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream and drizzle of chocolate everywhere! The little one ate most of it and happily I might add!
When dinner was over, I went on a quick tour of the rest of the place. There is a nice sized bar area, separate from the restaurant where you can hear live music every Friday Happy Hour and DJ Joey D. thereafter! Upstairs is a private banquet area, newly renovated with 11 TV screens, 17 beers on draft and caters up to 120 guests. Please consider the Ashburner for your next party! Now that I have written quite a few dining out reviews, I have become a bit of a
connoisseur of great tasting food. This place was just added to my list of great eateries in NE Philadelphia! Dagwood’s Pub is located on 4625 Linden Ave, only a skip and jump from State Road, 95 and Grant Avenue. It is family owned and operated for the last 20 years by Eddie. He along with his staff including Mickey, Head Chef and Manager, make their patrons feel like part of their family. Even Eddie’s Mom or “Momma G”, as everyone lovingly calls her, at 70 something years of age….still cooks in the kitchen, making her famous Home-made Meatloaf and Meatballs. The staff was friendly, smiling; the atmosphere was quaint and relaxing. Bill, the Bartender, assured that all drinks were filled to the brim with each emptying and Nicole, our Waitress was a sweetheart. Dagwood’s Pub also has a Banquet Room upstairs, where you can hold your next Holiday Party or event-catered-all for a great price too!

Dagwood’s Pub is not a typical bar with typical bar food either. This place has an array of delectable full course dinners to choose from including, Prime Rib, Crabs, Mussels, Home-made Crab Cakes, and Specialty Fish dishes and so much more! For example every Saturday night for just $14.95 you get Prime Rib with soup, salad, and 2 vegetables. Other specials are available throughout the week. They also offer fantastic lunch specials, priced from $6.95 up to $7.95. For example: Fried Shrimp Basket with French Fries and Cole Slaw, Crab Cake Sandwich, Clams and Spaghetti w/Bread and Varieties of Hot and Cold Sandwiches/Wraps. All served with one serving of Soup and Salad, from 11:00am to 3:00pm, Monday thru Sunday. And little ones can have their very own kid’s meal for just $2.95; their choice of Spaghetti and Meatballs, Chicken Fingers and Fries, Cheeseburger and Fries, Grilled Cheese, or Peanut Butter and Jelly, my little baby’s favorite!

On our visit, Eddie and Mickey made sure we were “Wined and Dined” and we were to the fullest-literally! First we were presented with “The Dagwood” ($8.95). Come real hungry because this “man-sized” sandwich can feed like three people! It was presented on a jumbo tray, cut into three large pieces and loaded with layers of Roasted Turkey, Roast Beef, Ham, Provolone & American Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato & Onions. Home-made creamy Cole Slaw, Pickles, Hot Peppers and Chips on the side! It was delicious but we had to make room for the rest of our meal and were glad to take it home for lunch the next day! Next came the appetizers, most popular is “Verne’s Shrimp” ($8.95) and “Verne’s Wings” ($6.95) and all I can say is they were HOT HOT HOT! I don’t mean just their secret Cayenne Pepper Sauce either! Both dishes were lightly battered, seasoned just right whether you dipped in Blu Cheese or slathered the jumbo-sized shrimp and wings with the sauce! Great for watching the game at the bar or for pre-dinner delights. We were told that people from all over call just for containers of their sauce, which they gladly fufill. Then we had the Portabella Mushroom stuffed with Jumbo Lump Crabcake with a side of Tartar Sauce.This is served as a specilty item only once or twice a month. My mouth is just watering typing this part up. This was absolutely my favorite! It was bigger than my hand. No fillers just filled with the real thing, HOME-MADE all the way! Capital Y-U-M-M!, an extra M for extra delicious! We also tried the fresh Blackened Tuna Bites with a Horseradish Cream Sauce, which was tantalizing on the palatte and grilled to perfection.

Next came Prince Edward Island Mussels with Red Sauce or White Sauce-and typically since we could not make up our minds-we got both. These Mussels were beautifully seasoned with bits of scallions, white wine, garlic, butter and hot pepper seeds. Each mouthful held the most sweetest gems. They were succulent and cooked just right! Probably the best I have ever tasted so far!

Before we could put a dent in the Mussels, the Hard Shelled Blue-Point Crabs arrived, cleaned and cooked to perfection-boiled not steamed like other places. The crabmeat was sweet and so good I didnt even dip it in butter. No wonder….this recipe was handed down originally from Eddie’s Crab House, a 80 year tradition! You ask how much?! Did you know that every Tuesday and Wednesday night, from 5-8pm, it’s All-U-Can-Eat! That’s right all the Hard Shelled Crabs, Mussels, Wings, and Pasta, Soup and Salad you want for just $24.95! There is no other place around that can offer you that kind of deal!

CP_CrabfriesOf course I have been to Chickie’s & Pete’s lots of times and always have a great time! So when Mikey V. asked me to do a dining out at the Boulevard location in NE Philly-I was very excited. I finally was gonna try “Lisa’s Blonde Lobster Pie” (White Lobster Pizza)! Can you imagine? Big chunks of lobster meat baked on a white pizza- it literally melted in my mouth with each bite! It’s Bon Jovi’s favorite pie and now its mine! Hahaha! It was everything I dreamed of and more!

And that’s not all! First and foremost, the staff there was absolutely hands down wonderful. Friendly, personable, and can I say….I was treated like a Queen- and so was my guest! As soon as we were seated we were met by Jim, Julie and Joanne…but honestly I have never had anything less than great service. We started out with their soup at just $5.50 each. My guest had the Crabfries Bisque….a cream based soup with dices of potato, carrot, bacon and it was topped off with their World Famous Crab Fries. She picked the right soup for herself- cause the one I chose was the Seafood Chowder and it was off the hook (so to speak). It was a tomato-based soup with spices, big cuts of red potatoes, jumbo shrimp, baby clams and mussels. Good to the last drop!

Because their menu has so many wonderful choices, we found it difficult to decide what we wanted to try. So we asked for small samples of their dishes but Chickie’s & Pete’s don’t do anything small. They brought dish after dish of huge portions of some of their favorite new items and classics! Of course we could not resist their World Famous Crabfries served with 2 sides of their creamy cheese sauce! Then came the sandwiches-all made with fresh ingrediants and home-made Italian rolls. Chickie’s Cutlet Italian-this sandwich priced at just $7.00 was fantastic and so delicious. The lightly breaded chicken breast cutlet was cooked to perfection! It was topped with melted provolone cheese and roasted red peppers. It was simply tantalizing.

Next sample…..mesmorized by the name “Magooby”, I knew we just had to try this! Filled with pickles, onions, crab fries, melted cheese and shrimp all on one sandwich ($7.00)-its cold and hot at the same time. And yes it is very “ma-goowy” so get extra napkins! It is worth every bite. So on to the next “daring” selection…Lobster Cheesesteak ($13.00). Yes, I said Lobster, and it’s the real thing. Fresh chunks of lobster meat on top of Philly’s famous sliced beef sirloin with creamy cheese sauce. And the consensus is …it’s an aquired taste. My guest liked it wit cheese I- wit-out! After tasting the left-overs, my daughter’s opinion was “It’s great with ketchup”. You will have to decide for yourself! Then our wonderful server enticed us into trying their Classic dish- a heaping bowl of Mussels in their (Nationally Acclaimed) Red Sauce ($11.00). The sauce is fantastic; great for dipping the bread. The mussels were delicate and soft with just the right seasoning! No wonder Chickie’s & Pete’s Mussels are Award Winning (South Philly’s People Choice Award 6 years in a row!)

Barely able to finish to completion- any of the servings sent to us, the staff happily wrapped up the leftovers for my guest and I to enjoy probably for the rest of the week at home! While dining we met several other diners who were also very happily engaged in their food, the sports game of the day, and simply enjoying a day out at Chickie’s & Pete’s. Cav_Eagle_ExpressTAILGATE–noun 1.) the board or gate at the back of a wagon, truck, station wagon, etc., which can be removed or let down for convenience in loading or unloading of picnic items to be consumed before a sporting event. 2.) Bob “Cav” Cavanaugh.

You can find the definition of TAILGATE in the upper lot of the Jethro Parking Lot located a Hail Mary Pass away from Lincoln Financial Field hours and hours before the kickoff of a Philadelphia Eagles Game.

All you need to do is look for the Eagles Express Minibus and yell “Yo Cav!” and you’ve got yourself front row seats on the 50 yard line of the ultimate tailgate. Just follow the roaring sea of green jerseyed fans flocking around Cav’s Catering.

25 years ago, Bob Cavanaugh, a northeast Philly guy and PGW employee was cooking on a small grill for ten guys in the Vet Stadium Parking lot before an Eagle Game.

But the purchase of two big green machines changed all that and his tailgates exploded.

The first, of course was his Eagles Express minibus. “Since I bought the bus, the parties got better,” Cav said.

On the side of the bus, two taps of Coors Light and Yuengling keep everyone happy whether the Eagles win or lose.

But the real deal came in 2008 when Cav bought his six burner Coleman Event Grill (The Godfather of Tailgate grills) with lids that he customized with Eagles logo and had specially made with steel handles.

Sitting on two steel carpenter horses, Cav’s Coleman cranks out his infamous filet mignon sandwiches, sausage and peppers, penne pasta with shrimp in a blush crème sauce, chicken cutlets, roast pork sandwiches on Cacia’s bakery rolls, kielbasa and sauerkraut and shrimp and scallop kabobs. Oh and a roasted pig!

Yeah. Hot dogs it ain’t. And Cav is more than just a guy in the parking lot with a grill. He’s the three-time winner of the Jack Daniel’s Great American Tailgate Party contest. Winner of the Philadelphia Daily News 2004 Tailgate Award. Cav has been featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Food Section and on the Food Network.

And it’s not just the parking lot of the Linc that Cav cooks on-he’s a mobile caterer and has a unique product that brings the ultimate tailgate experience to you. Here’s Cav’s recipe for his award winning Filet Mignon Sandwich:

*Just like the night before Thanksgiving, you brind your bird in sea salt to make it moist and juicy, Cav recommends mixing and combining all marinade ingredients together.

¼ cup of jack Daniels Whiskey

¼ cup of soy sauce

¼ cup Dijon-style mustard

¼ cup minced green onions

¼ cup packed light brown sugar

1 teaspoon of course salt

Dash of Worcestershire Sauce

Pepper to taste.

Now for the meat, Cav uses inch rounds of filet mignon. Grab 2 bell peppers-your choice of red, yellow or green, an onion and a 12 ounce can of the beer of your choice. Cav preaches that Cacia’s Bakery in South Philly is the epitome of tailgate sandwich rolls and your choice of American or provolone is all good.

You’ll want to pound the filet to tenderize and flatten them the night before and throw them in a big gallon zipper bag with your marinade and let them party together overnight. Cut up your peps and onions and plastic baggie them too overnight.

On game day, sauté your peps and onions in beer over medium heat until al dente. All that marinade for the steaks pays off for you. All you gotta do is grill them 3 minutes per side on medium high heat for medium rare. You can figure out the roll and cheese construction. Enjoy, it feeds 6 but you’ll want seconds.

ForkRestaurant-ChefTerenceFeury-LowResPHILADELPHIA, PA – Chef Terence Feury, of Old City’s acclaimed Fork (306 Market Street, 215-625-9425), is proud to announce the restaurant’s new policy of serving only sustainable seafood.  Working collaboratively with fishmonger Anthony McCarthy, Chef Feury sources the most responsible fish and shellfish and serves only those that are caught and shipped with respect for the environment.

“Throughout my career, I have always enjoyed preparing the best that the ocean has to offer,” says Chef Feury, who was recently named “Best Chef, 2010” by Philadelphia magazine.  “I hope that choosing to source our products from local fishermen and better managed fisheries will help to reduce the impact of commercial fishing on the environment, allowing us to serve delicious seafood at Fork for many years to come.”

To celebrate Fork’s commitment to sustainable fish and shellfish, Chef Feury will host a Sustainable Seafood Dinner on Wednesday, September 29, featuring The New York Times’ Paul Greenberg, author of Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food (Penguin, July 2010).  Chef Feury and fellow Le Bernardin alum and recent Top Chef contestant Jennifer Carroll of 10Arts restaurant will collaborate to prepare and serve a four-course tasting menu for $75 per person, excluding beverages, tax and gratuity.

Proceeds from the dinner will benefit two organizations: Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, the world’s leader in conservation research whose list of over-fished versus sustainable seafood choices is widely considered the industry standard, and The Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, NJ, a local organization dedicated to fostering a lifelong understanding and stewardship of the coastal environment.

Signed copies of Greenberg’s book will be available for purchase during the dinner.  Publisher’s Weekly wrote that “in this unusually entertaining and nuanced investigation into global fisheries…Greenberg examines our historical relationship with wild fish…challenging us to reevaluate whether fish are at their root expendable seafood or wildlife desperately in need of our compassion.”  The New York Times restaurant critic Sam Sifton called Four Fish “a necessary book for anyone truly interested in what we take from the sea to eat, and how, and why.  [Greenberg] posits the sense of privilege we should feel in consuming wild fish, along with the necessity of aquaculture.”

“Sustainable seafood” refers to fish or seafood caught or farmed with consideration for the long-term viability of individual marine species and for the ocean’s ecological balance as a whole.  Fork’s current menu includes such sustainable seafood choices as New Zealand king salmon, West Coast halibut, black sea bass, line-caught swordfish and sea scallops.  Guests can expect their offerings to change frequently, depending on the season and the availability of certain species.
