Finnigan’s Wake is so much more than just another corner bar in Philadelphia. It is located at the corner of 3rd & Spring Garden Streets, in the heart beat of this awesome city. Finnigan’s Wake became so popular, so fast that it is hard to remember a time when it was not an integral part of the City of Brotherly Love. Local Irish bands are always playing in the Quiet Man’s Pub (basement area), which is chock full of invaluable antique mementoes from great movies. The 1st floor has a great meeting room area, plus a focking fabulous room for local rock/top 40 cover bands!! I have spent many drunken azz nights here on the 1st floor trying to pick up a few hot Philly & Jersey gurlz!! Let’s work our way to the 2nd floor, where we have the Civil War theme dedicated to both the Irish 69th Brigade and Abraham Lincoln, and is home to the famed “Lincoln Doors.” After the President was assassinated, his body was transported to Philadelphia to lie in state at Independence Hall. That night his body was kept in a Northern Liberties funeral parlor and the doors from that establishment has been made a part of the second floor, the “Lincoln Level”. The 3rd floor catering hall is named after Benjamin Franklin, which is graced with a beautiful view of the bridge that bears his name. Some claim that Finnigan’s is haunted and those items, particularly keys, disappear routinely. It may be Old Abe; it may be the late Mr. Finnigan himself?

Jimmy (night manager) always has things in total control with a fine staff of awesome personalities!! I have never seen such a bunch of staff members that actually luv their jobs and it show as they all mingle with us rowdy customers. On this visit, I had to kick up my beverage of choice to a Jack Daniels & Coke with a side shot of Jameson. I think the spirit of old man Finnigan kinda got to me as I was feeling very good after just a few cocktails. If you are ever looking for a spot to just chill with your friends over sum drinks and good food or just out with your partners in crime, Finnigan’s Wake is my pick of the year!! This focking place ROCKS!!

I seriously have no damn idea where to start!! Finnigan’s Wake always has something going on!! On Monday’s come see Mike Anthony & Friend’s Acoustic Night starts @ 9pm. Tuesday’s are College Night with Beer Pong, DJ Kitty & $2 Miller Lites. Wednesday’s go back with the Hy Litt Show Live Broadcast from 5pm to 10pm, then it is Karaoke with $2 Yuengling Lagers. Thursday’s are for us sports fans as they had the Phanatic Live 97.5 Broadcast with Mike Missanelli, Larry Bowa, Jayson Stark & Ricky Bottalico. Friday’s are open for all the hottest local Philly bands like The Benderz, The Loop & Loudmouth. Saturday’s go to the next level with a wild azz party night as the bands roll in with such talent as The Rockets, Split Decision, Secret Service & Please, Please Me. Sunday’s again are for us crazy azz sports phanatics with all the NFL games along with DJ Jimmy in the evening hours. Finnigan’s Wake has an awesome catering service with numerous affordable wedding catering specials and office party packages, just call and ask for the beautiful Kathy.

The food at Finnigan’s is focking insane people!! There are, of course, the standard Irish dishes like a Guinness Beef Stew to die for, Shepherd’s Pie, Fish & Chips, like your mom used to make!! And if you like potatoes, (what self-respecting Irishman does not?) you gotta try the sweet potato fries with that marvelous sweet & sour dipping sauce. There is always potato soup, wonderful salads exist for those watching their weight. They also have standard “pub fare” for those who want a Phillly Cheese steak or a home-made crab cake.

Mark December 6th, 2009 (Sunday) from 2pm to 9pm on your focking calendars NOW!! Irish Winterfest 2009 is going to hit Finnigan’s Wake with Paddy’s Well, Bare Knuckle Boxers & Broken Shillelaghs all Live in concert!! The doors open @ 1pm with Irish Dancers, Irish Food & Irish Vendors all this shit for just $10!! WTF, are they serious?? AWESOME, I am so focking there!!

The Big Man Roundhouse Ron (ME), always focking luvs to kick back and spend a few hours @ Finnigan’s Wake Irish Pub!! You must visit Finnigan’s at 3rd & Spring Garden Streets or please check them out online at www.Finnigans.com.

McNoodles_2McNoodle’s Irish Bar located in the 7300 block of Frankford Avenue has an all new attitude towards making people happy and giving us what we want in a local tavern. I have visited numerous bars in and around Philadelphia during the past 20 years, but this spot seems to take things very seriously. From the amazing friendly bartenders, to the ice cold beers, the mixed cocktails and let’s not forget the tantalizing food choices. I have personally spent many wild days and crazy azz nights at McNoodle’s Irish Bar. My experiences have always been mind blowing as I have made many new friends here.

My boyz Freddie & Chris took this Irish Bar to the next level with some of the best music, drinks specials, amazing staff and a complete food menu. I was being served my usual Jack Daniels & Diet Coke by the very talented Heather. I even got a twist of lime in my beverage of choice. But, I would like to thank the entire bartender staff including Donna, Carl, Mike, DJ, Danny, Todd, Beth, Stephanie, Kris, Tom, Jon, Brian, Mike, Jennifer, Tim, Deana, Denny, Ryan, Shawn, Lindsey, Sonny & Ryan. Let’s not leave out the hard working barbacks Casey, Joe & Carl. You dudes work your focking azz off for McNoodle’s and the fine people of NE Philly. DJ Bill Keith, DJ Joey El, DJ Bobby O & DJ Brian the Breeze Gallo keep us all moving with their mad beats and selection of outstanding tunes from yesterday to today.

McNoodle’s has an excellent layout with the huge main bar room and a very spacious side bar room with dining tables. There is not a bad seat in the house for watching your favorite Philly sports team, as McNoodle’s is equipped with televisions everywhere you look. I am not a bar stool connoisseur, but for some reason this spot feels great to chill, relax and just mingle with new friends. OMG, if you have never been to McNoodle’s Irish Bar, please do yourself a favor and go check this place out!!

The specials start every Monday through Friday for Happy Hour Madness with $1.50 Pints & Bottles. Tuesday Nights you can get focking NOODLED with DJ Joey El as he takes over the turn tables. Wednesday Nights are Karaoke Krazyness as people get nutz with $1.50 domestic pints. Thursday Nights is a huge dance party with DJ Bill Keith spinning all the hits until 2am with quarter wings, $3.00 Coronas & Twisted Teas (9pm – 11pm). Friday Happy Hours start the weekend off right with DJ Joey El and $1.50 Miller Lite bottles (8pm – 10pm), this madness goes on all night long. Saturday Afternoons get wild with buckets of Miller Lite & High Life ponies 6 for $7.00. Saturday Nights are taken over by the Fabulous DJ Bobby O as he kills it with $2.00 Coors Light bottles (9pm – 11pm). Sundays get really insane with quarter wings, $1.00 pints, ice cold buckets of 5 12oz Bud or Bud Lights for $10.00. And let’s not forget, during all Flyers & Eagles games, Bud & Bud Light pints are only $1.50.

I also hear that McNoodle’s is having a huge party planned for Thanksgiving Eve with unbelievable drink specials and music all focking night until 2am. My crazy azz is gonna stop by for a few cocktails with some of my friends. On Thanksgiving morning, McNoodle’s Irish Bar is hosting pregame party for the Judge vs. Lincoln game this year. Don’t forget that you can also celebrate your next private party or Christmas party at this incredible tavern.

Take it from me (Roundhouse Ron), you must visit McNoodle’s Irish Bar at 7358 Frankford Avenue or please check them out online at www.myspace.com/McNoodles or www.facebook.com/McNoodles.pub

MAPLE SHADE, NJ – On Saturday, October 24, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., the first new brewpub to open in New Jersey in 10 years, Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant (124 East Kings Highway, 856-273-0300) will celebrate their arrival in Maple Shade by partnering with the Garden State’s largest craft brewery, Flying Fish Brewing Company (1940 Olney Avenue, 856-489-0061), for a special Brewer’s Reserve Tasting Event. Featuring hand-crafted beers from both breweries, this event is a do-not-miss opportunity for New Jersey beer lovers.

“Here at Iron Hill, we’re flattered and proud that Flying Fish has offered to join us for this special tasting celebration,” says Iron Hill Maple Shade Head Brewer Chris LaPierre who will be joined at the event by Flying Fish Head Brewer Casey Hughes. “I can’t think of a better way to commemorate our arrival here in New Jersey than by collaborating with such talented fellow brewers to introduce residents of our new home to our beers.”

Flavorful offerings for the pay-as-you-go event will include: Iron Hill’s Heywood Tripel, 2004 Barleywine, and Totally Inappropriate; alongside Flying Fish’s Exit 4 American Tripel, Belgian Imperial Cru, and Grand Cru. These potent beers were chosen because they are prime examples of the higher alcohol, fuller flavored autumn and winter offerings at each brewery.

“At Flying Fish, we’ve always thought of ourselves as ambassadors of New Jersey beer culture,” says Hughes. “This special tasting event is our way of welcoming an exciting newcomer to the scene and letting them – and our fans – know that brewing here is only getting better.”

Flying Fish was the world’s first ‘virtual’ microbrewery, establishing an Internet presence as early as 1995. That presence helped to generate press interest and woo investors to the fledgling brewery, which would not open for business until late 1996. Today, Muller and his team oversee four full-time styles, as well as a variety of seasonal beers. Their brews have been featured at the Great British Beer Festival, Oregon Brewers Festival and Canada ’s Biere de Mondial Festival. They have won medals at the Great American Beer Festival, Real Ale Festival and the World Beer Championships, and are the only New Jersey brewery featured in Best American Beers. Flying Fish was recently named “Local Hero: Beverage Artisan of 2009” by Edible Jersey magazine.

For more information about Flying Fish, please visit them online at www.flyingfish.com or call (856) 489-0061.

3monkeys_logoWhere to begin our next dining out feature was not an easy choice. See, there are thousands of places in our Greater Delaware Valley area to pick from and for our feature, in this special OOT issue, one of our favorite places is the Three Monkeys Cafe. So I called on Gavin one of the owners and said we would like to feature his Three Monkeys and he said to me, ”come on over. ” This Cafe, has a turn of the century hand carved bar along with an upscale dining room called the “Risdon Ferry Dining Room” just added to the restaurant this past year, which is Victorian in style and designed with much thought. It just adds more character to the restaurant & bar and is also available for any kind of private function. The 3 Monkeys also has an outside Monkey Court with a full bar under a tent and just the perfect setting at night, under the stars, to make your night. This place really has a lot going for it. All summer long, my wife and I along with some of our best friends would meet up on any night of the week. We really enjoy the outside Monkey Court for dining and to just hang out and have a few drinks along with some great conversations. So, in this dining out feature we will focus in on the outside Monkey Court. Fall is perfect for dining outside and under their Tree Bar they have a tent with a big HDTV Flat screen behind the bar, so on warm Sunday NFL game days – you’ll will be able to sit outside and enjoy the Birds.
Now the review:
The menu at the Three Monkeys is not your typical restaurant menu. This is an upscale bar but they keep the prices very moderate and offer good portions of Pub style Appetizers, Wraps, Salads, Entrees from NY Strip Steaks to Chicken Florentine. Entrees are nice sized portions and come with a house salad, vegetables and your choice of rice or potatoes. They also offer an assortment of burgers and sandwiches.
For starters, my wife Barbara ordered the crispy calamari( $8.99) and I asked for the hot crab dip with pita bread($13.99.) Both items we shared and were very tasty and filling. Next up was our entrees. After checking out the menu we both wanted a chicken dish. Barbara ordered the Chicken Florentine at ( $15.49) which comes with tomatoes, spinach, garlic with a parmesian cheese sauce. I ordered the Chicken Piccata ($14.99) which comes with lemon, capers, garlic in a white wine sauce. Both portions are nice sized and will fill you up. Each dinner came with a house salad and vegetables. Next up we did have some room for dessert so we said we would split something good and we decided on the Chocolate mousse pie to end our meal. What a way to end a great meal. Good portions – with moderate prices and excellent service is what we always seem to find here.
At the Three Monkeys they have a saying …You can pick your Habitat. Have fun in the turn of the century
hand carved bar made in the 1890’s and their gastopub fare. You can enjoy fine cuisine in their RISDOW FERRY ROOM with a true Victorian flair …You can enjoy the outside Monkey Court a KEY WEST inspired courtyard…You can escape from it all and enjoy their outside TREE BAR under the tent and under the stars…This is the Three Monkeys and it really is one of a kind and so unique. **** Four stars out of (4) – FOR SURE!
