BANDCUTThem Bones is a name that may sound very familiar to you.  For 4 years now, this band has been rocking bars and clubs in NJ & PA, building up quite a name and following.  I spoke with Guitar player, Brian Mariano and asked him why they have had such good success and he told me, “  We are very high energy with no bells and whistles.  We don’t wear costumes or give out prizes or anything like that.  During a typical show our lead singer, Chris Vanzyl is all over the place getting people jacked up and into it.  We just rock out as hard as we can and have a blast doing it!”

Another reason why Them Bones may sound familiar is that they were last year’s winner of the WMGK House Band Competition.  Brian told me what a great experience that was for them.  They went into it with no real expectations and worked hard on learning new music, just figuring they would see what happens.  Brian told me, “We learned about 50 Classic Rock songs in a month to prepare for the first show.  It was John Debella’s Halloween Bash at Finnegan’s Wake.  It was tough – every one of us was sick.  But we pushed through it and the crowd had a blast.  The WMGK people were great to us and playing the “Let Freedom Rock” fest was really cool”.

Them Bones definitely has a lot of fans in the area too.  We recently set up on online pole on Facebook, asking people to vote for their favorite local bands and these guys had the most votes out of any other local cover band.  Playing songs in their own way has certainly given them an edge.  Although they are good enough to cover a song note for note, they prefer to put their own spin on things, keeping that high energy going so that things don’t get stale.  Brian explained, “For us in the band, every show is really a party.  We love to play and watch people dancing and digging the music.

This is a band that just likes to see everyone enjoying themselves.  Brian said, “We just want people to have a great time with us.  We have no agenda, but to have fun.  Just like, ‘Hey, we are having a party, there’s gonna be beer, you guys should come’”

If you would like to go see Them Bones perform live, here are a couple of their upcoming dates: 12/3 – The Taproom Grill in Haddon Township, NJ; 12/9 – Sam’s Bar & Grille in Blackwood, NJ.  You can see their full schedule and listen to recordings on their website at

Them Bones is:  Chris Vanzyl – Vocals; Chris Smith – Drums; Mike Hegeman – Bass;

John Carpenter – Guitar and Brian Mariano – Guitar.  The OOT would once again like to congratulate the band on winning our pole, and wish you continued success for years to come!

chowder_promo_picChowder is a band with deep roots in NE Philadelphia.  They have been together now for 10 years and have a very large and dedicated fan base.  The band has a very unique style, both in playing covers and in writing their own originals.  Chowder is an extremely versatile band, always focusing on showing their fans a great time!
I spoke to my friend and Guitarist, Billy Luber and he told me, “Our music is really hard to classify as one type of genre. We mix in Blues, Rock, Jazz and Funk with lots of great leads and chord progressions.  It’s very different from anything else you may hear out there.”  The music that Chowder plays is very crisp and tight.  They work very hard during practice, making sure to get every single part down, exactly the way they want it.  Billy explained, “We really want our originals to shine and we work them over and over until they are perfect.  When we do play covers we don’t play the same standard songs many other cover bands tend to play.  Instead, we play songs that we like and just have fun jamming.  They come off so much better and our fans love it.”
If you go to see Chowder play live, you are going to feel energized!  Their sets are full of power and positive energy.  Everyone is up dancing and smiling and just having a good time.  This is a really great group of musicians who are extremely friendly and eager to please.   Even after 10 years of playing, Billy told me they all still get butterflies before a show.  He went on to say, “We just want to entertain.  We want to see smiles on everyone’s faces and we want everyone to leave feeling good.  It’s not about the money for us – we just want to give people live music they can truly enjoy.”
If you are ready to see a great band perform both covers and originals, you can catch them at the following venues:
November 4 – Curran’s Irish Inn, Bensalem, PA
November 19 – Redz Bar & Grill, NE Phila
December 16 – Flukes Restaurant & Pub, NE Phila
If you would like to learn more about the band and hear some of their songs, you can check them out on Facebook right now – just search “Chowder Band.”  Chowder is Jason Cowden –  Lead Vocals and Guitar; Chris Griffith – Drums; Gino Pini – Bass Guitar; and Billy Luber Guitar.

AV_promo3What do you get when you take a little 80’s hair band music, add some Classic Rock, a dash of Top 40 and shake it all up with some crazy costuming and props? You get the band Angry Vic, of course!

I have known these guys for a long time. I remember the very first time I met bass player, Kirk Swenson at a local bar. I thought to myself, “I keep seeing that guy everywhere, who the hell I he?” So I walked up to him and asked him and he handed me a business card (which I still have!) and told me all about his band. That was 7 years ago and I have been friends and fans of these guys ever since. I like them because they are fun and they don’t take themselves so seriously. I also like the music they play. I spoke to my good Bud and their lead singer, Bobby Davidson about what AV has been up to lately. Angry Vic has always been a band to draw a big crowd in the Levittown area, and now they are trying to branch out and play further into Philly and NJ. Unfortunately, some places have the wrong idea about this band. They are NOT a Heavy Metal band, as you may think. When they say they play 80’s Metal, you have to realize that back in the 80’s, some people would consider bands like Motley Crue, Poison and Ratt to be “Metal” when nowadays, not so much. Others would call it “Hair Band Music,” when it really is just good old Rock and Roll from a specific timeframe. Personally I love 80’s music! It brings me back to a time in my life when I had many less responsibilities and lived a much more carefree lifestyle! The 80’s were my “good ol’ days” and if that makes me sound old, then Oh Well! I had a lot more fun than most, I am sure! Angry Vic brings those memories back to many of us and trust me, there are LOTS of us out there!

As I spoke to Bobby, he explained to me, “We like to take our shows to a different level of entertainment. Sure we play the songs well, but we also like to entertain the crowd by bringing a kind of “arena show” to them. We play what people want to hear and help them have fun with our crazy costumes and props. We want it to be different from what they would see any where else.” The guys in Angry Vic are always working hard to make their shows events, too. In fact, one of the things they are known for is their annual Valentine’s Day party. Its just one big pajama party with the whole town! Something really big that is coming up for AV is Teddy Dugan’s Halloweenfest, which will be taking place on October 29 at The Fraternal Order of the Eagles 2489, in Fairless Hills, PA. This is a big production show with several bands throughout the night, a $500 prize for best costume and lots of “ghoulish” fun! It’s right up Angry Vic’s alley, because they like to be theatrical onstage and comical at the same time!

Angry Vic is always doing some sort of charity event, too. Every year, they play at The Gilda Run, which helps raise awareness about Ovarian Cancer, as well as The Delaware Valley Flag Memorial. Since their start 8 years ago this November, the band has gone through many changes and one most important that everyone should know is that they have changed their repertoire quite a bit. They still do the heaver Rock covers, but are more focused on being more of a party band. They will play some Metallica, but will also play some Journey, John Mellencamp and yes, even some Rick Springfield! Bobby explained to me that they are even starting to play some 80’s themed weddings for those that are interested. “We just want to be the best party band around and put more focus on entertaining the crowd.”

All in all, Angry Vic is a fun, not-so-serious group of guys that just want to be the best they can be, while showing everyone a really good time! You can check out their website at to see their full schedule, learn more about the band and also book them for your next party or event. Angry Vic is: Bobby Davidson – Lead Vocals; Kirk Swenson – Bass; Chris Sweeney – Drums; John Strazzeri – Guitar and Jeremy Stockton – Guitar.

Shorty_Long_and_The_Jersey_Horns_Band_PhotoSince 2002, Shorty Long & The Jersey Horns have been WOWING music lovers of all ages in some of the best venues up and down the East Coast. During this time-span, the band has performed with Cheap Trick, The Marshall Tucker Band and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as at 76er’s games and other major sporting events. They have also performed on, featured, mentioned, thanked, acknowledged, or recognized by by 106.3 G-ROCK, 105.7 THE HAWK Radio, 93.3 WMMR’s Preston & Steve Show and by Howard Stern. Claiming to be “The World’s #1 Party Band,” this group of musicians can back up that statement with thousands of fans who will enthusiastically agree!

Lead by Ricky “Shorty Long” Tisch (Keyboards/Lead Vocalist and Party Master) this band not only sounds great, but the show they put on is more unique than anything I have ever seen. I spoke to Bass GuitaGuitarist Kern, who is also the Emcee for the band. John told me, “Our shows are like watching Hee Haw on crack! We do not only concentrate on the audio aspect of the band. The visual part of the show is unlike anything you will ever see!” Their shows have themes, costumes and a lot of focus is poking fun at John’s mom on stage. At the center of it all is the 3 foot character himself, Ricky Tisch (aka Shorty Long). Ricky has had to overcome much adversity due to his disease, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a congenital disease causing extremely fragile bones. “When you see him”, John explained, “some people feel a little awkward. Then as Shorty performs, they see what an awesome entertainer he truly is and he knocks it out of the park every single time.”

If you have not yet seen Shorty Long & The Jersey Horns perform, you really need to make it a point to go check them out. Their shows always have a theme and Shorty’s costumes are hoot! Whether he is driving around in his toy 4 x 4 playing keyboards dressed as an astronaut, pilgrim or all pimped out, you can’t help but laugh, smile and enjoy yourself. As John told me, “we’ll play whatever will make the crowd go insane! Our shows are like a parade with booze!” They play a range of music from the 60’s through today’s Top 40 and especially focus on songs that require a horn section. Cover music however, is not all this band is about. They have written 20-30 of their own original tunes as well. They never stick to a set list of songs and play what the crowd wants to hear. It was great to talk to John and hear the enthusiasm is his voice, especially when he talked about Shorty. He and John have been playing together in one way or another since 1995. John told me, “Shorty is the greatest friend I have ever had and I just love performing with this guy!”

You can see Shorty Long & The Jersey Horns perform at some choice venues such as The Sands Casino in AC and The Beachcomber in Avalon. Here are a few of their upcoming September shows: 9/9 – The Sands Casino in AC; 9/16 – The Beachcomber in Avalon NJ and 9/30 Breakers Bar located in Mohegan Sun at Pocono Down, To see their full schedule, view photos, watch videos and learn more about this fabulous group of musicians, please visit their website at, visit them on Facebook at or on Twitter at!/ShortyLongRocks.

Shorty Long & The Jersey Horns is: Ricky “Shorty Long” Tisch – Keyboards/Lead Vocals/Party Master; John Kern – Emcee/Bass Guitar/Lead Vocals; John “The Hitman” Hawes – Drums; Dee Faraci – Lead Vocals; Carl Stives – Percussion;
Frank “Crispy Bacon” Benjamin – Trumpet/Saxophone; Bill Jarvis – Trumpet;
Neal “Percolator” Perkins – Trombone; Mario Frasca – Guitar; Paul Baccash – Guitar and “Doc” Jones – Media Crew Chief.

XeroAs many of you have now learned, the band Xero (comprised of former members of the band Octane) has now hit the cover band scene. For many years, we’ve all grown to love the local, hard rocking original band first lead by Brian Bortnick. But as times change, we all have to make decisions on what we need to do to change with the times. The new band, Xero, has been hitting clubs all over the area with their new set list of cover songs and has many people very excited!

I sat down and spoke with Lead Singer, Jordan Demarest and he explained, “We decided to play covers in order to appeal to a larger mass of people. The fans of Octane are going to really love this and for those that enjoy all types of music, Xero is a band that will really appeal to them, as well.” There is a great deal of talent between the 4 band members, and there is no doubt they can pull off just about any style of music and do it well. From Classic Rock to today’s Top 40 Dance and Alternative Rock, Xero has the bases covered.

Don’t expect Xero to be like other cover bands out there, though. Even though they may be doing some “lighter” sounding music which will be quite different from you may have been used to in the old Octane days, they still have that harder edge sound. “We will be playing a lot more crowd friendly Rock, that is high energy and fun,” Jordan explained. These guys are tight as can be, with exquisite harmonies, and since all 4 members sing lead and play other instruments, you will enjoy a very versatile band and a show that is different every time you see them.

They are all about just building an identity for the band right now and will be playing some great rooms such as Alibis in West Chester, Tom & Jerry’s in Milmont Park and Philly’s #1 Rock Club, Whiskey Tango. Starting on 8/25, Xero will be LIVE every Thursday night, through the month of September at The Gypsy Bar at The Borgata in Atlantic City! Be sure to go check them out at this awesome club! You can visit the bands Facebook page at to learn more about them and where they will be next! Xero is: Jordan Demarest – Lead Vocals, Guitar; Joe Berndt – Bass, Vocals;
Eric Steigenhofer – Guitar, Vocals; and Andy Difronzo – Drums.

For those of you that are the die-hard Octane fans, don’t worry! You still have the opportunity to hear the heart pounding, hard-rocking and edgy originals you loved in the past with the all new band, Defy. Their Lead Singer, David Simpson brings an all new look and onstage presence to the band. Along with Jordan, Joe, Eric and Andy, you can expect great things from them, including a brand new CD this Fall! To check out the all new band, you can visit their Facebook page at Horns up Rock fans! This is gonna be a cool ride!

think_pink_promo_3If you are a fan of the music from the 70’s on up through the 90’s like me, one band that is surely on your list of favorites is Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd actually formed in the mid 60’s and became well-known for their progressive compositions, bizarre lyrics and musical experimentation. Selling more than 73 million albums in the US alone, this is a band whose music is timeless.

The music of Pink Floyd can now be enjoyed once again, in a live “experience”, thanks to local Philly and National touring tribute act, Think Pink Floyd. For the last 4 years, Think Pink Floyd has been mesmerizing crowds of people all over with their fantastic sound, light and video show. They play all the favorite Pink Floyd hits that everyone knows and loves, showcasing entire albums from start to finish. The band demonstrates remarkable musicianship on stage and gives their audience a spectacular production whenever they perform.

Think Pink Floyd has built up an enormous repertoire playing to four hours of vintage Floyd material that will just blow your mind. They have all their bases covered too, by including music from the young Pink Floyd days in 1967 on up through the mid 90’s. Think Pink Floyd brings back the music of such albums as “Meddle”, “Dark Side Of The Moon”, “Wish You Were Here”, “Animals”, “The Wall”, “A Momentary Lapse Of Reason” and “The Division Bell” and they create a mood that every Pink Floyd lover will enjoy.

If you have been to a Think Pink Floyd show, you know the time and dedication it takes to pull off such a quality performance. If you have not, you really should take the time to get out and see them. Coming in August, you will have the opportunity to see Think Pink live and in person, among several other Tribute acts at the Tribute Palooza! On Saturday, 8/6 at The Ukie Club located at 847 North Franklin Street in Philadelphia, you can catch this act, as well as several other well-known Tribute bands from the area in a family friendly environment! From 1 pm – 10 pm Tribute Palooza will feature, Swan Song (Led Zeppelin Tribute), Romeo Delight (Van Halen Tribute), Kick It Out (Heart Tribute), Light My Fire (Doors Tribute) and my good friend AJ Slick with his Steve Ray Vaughan Tribute, Soul To Soul! Tickets are just $20 per person which includes food and music all day long! There will also be vendors, crafts and activities for the kids, so make sure to write it down on your calendar now so that you don’t forget. This is a show you are not going to want to miss! For more info, please contact the Ukie Club’s website at Tickets will be on advanced sale soon!

The music of Pink Floyd was magical and Think Pink Floyd brings back the psychedelic sound of an extremely unique band. Quite frankly, no one can play the music of Pink Floyd like Think Pink Floyd ‘s Lead Guitarist, Syd Sholly. His thoughtful playing and extreme musicianship is a site for the eyes and a feast for the ears – all replenishing the need in the soul to hear the music of one of the most beloved bands in the world. The entire band comes together for one hell of an experience that you need to see and feel.

Think Pink is: Bill – Guitar and Vocals; Syd – Lead Guitar and Vocals; Timmy – Bass and Vocals, Chie – Keys and Vocals and Roy – Drums and Vocals. You can catch Think Pink Floyd at many locations throughout the area, including every other month or so at one of The Out On The Town’s favorite spots, Sweeney’s Saloon located at 13639 Philmont Ave in Philly. Sweeney’s is a huge supporter of local tribute acts and a great place to see live music any time! To Think Pink Floyd’s full schedule and learn more about the band, please visit their website at
